People show remorse for that time in my life, but I look back on it fondly. As an adult, I feel so powerless to deal with mundane social or lifestyle issues, and fear death more than ever. It was liberating to embrace the short life I had already lived. People don't understand how easy it is to enjoy almost everything when you aren't promised anything.

Interestingly, I'm not a Bright Eyes fan. I can't stand most of their songs, but this particular one will always mean a significant amount to me. It's good to remember how literally unimportant everything is.

May 16, 2012 - I like to think of it as since there isn't much of a purpose to life that is set in stone, we all have the power to make our lives mean whatever we want them to and live accordingly. If i got it right and thats what the song is trying to say, then the message is pretty happy depending on how you approach it.
