May 29, 2012 - this live vid is sick!!!
ben laver Says:
May 29, 2012 - except when jimi wrote manic depression he did not borrow this riff, and these guys cannot solo
ben laver Says:
May 29, 2012 - minus any guitar ability or soloing,And ripping off a manic depression riff. And the voice is amateur without the effect
ben laver Says:
May 29, 2012 - but it is not cause the originators and all those cats in the 60's did it better. The middle par how musically lost they are. These guys are poor imitators stealing manic depression riff and merely repeating iit without any musically exciting, no dynamic. Kids dont know any better hah
Sparkz49 Says:
May 29, 2012 - You don't need to solo after every verse to be a good guitarist, it's the emotion, the rhythm and the notes themselves that make a good guitarist. And I highly doubt he "ripped off" anything. There have been thousands of songs recorded and written since the invention of the phonograph, it's nigh impossible to write something nowadays that doesn't at least vaguely resemble something else. And his voice? It's absolutely perfect for the blues, which is really all that matters for the Keys' music.
ben laver Says:
May 30, 2012 - but none of these modern bands solo at all, and I know why. When grunge began it as a backlash to shredder hair metal of the late 80's. Artists and the industry alike decided they can sell bands to the public and instrumental skill was unimportant. Now we have indie bands that wank, emo punk bands and general boring un -creative m usic all because kids could do nothing but bash one string. Even Radio head is boring without improvisation where the guitar or keys sing
ben laver Says:
May 30, 2012 - vaguely, he used the main riff from Manic Depression ...pleaze,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,stop covering for what is obvious to us older folkthanks for taking the time though
Sparkz49 Says:
May 30, 2012 - They used maybe three notes from Manic Depression.Even if they did it intentionally, they used a bit from Hendrix and built it into their own, unique riff, which means they were influenced by it. As a whole, you cannot honestly tell me this song sounds anything like Manic Depression. It has more of a hard, driving beat, while Jimi's has a fast, jazz-like style, and a completely different lyrical pattern. And I can guarantee Dan can solo, but with one guitar, it doesn't leave much room for solos.
ben laver Says:
May 30, 2012 - but its not a unique riff, its a dummed down trite one that does not alter or change as the structure moves on. All the greats, Page, Walsh all know to subtely alter the riff, which makes knowing what he is doing difficult if you are a musician trying to cover the song.Oh yea he can solo, check out the end of Gold On the Ceiling, the last notes he runs a riff are it is really amateur. Whereas watch Sting me but the black Crowes on Lenno to start look at the difference.

May 30, 2012 - Look what I found when I typed in Black Keys suck:AnonymousMay 28, 2012 6:23 AMThankyou so much for this. I googled "the black keys suck" hoping someone shared my views. You put it into the words I was searching for. While everyone is entitled to like whatever they like, I somehow feel like the black keys have tricked the large majority of people into thinking they are the real deal by putting forward everything a blues/rock outfit has to offer except a little thing called talent
ben laver Says:
May 30, 2012 - here is the article:Even on their first few albums (which Black Keys fans will tell you are 'better' if you don't like their new stuff) you could hear the utter lack of any emotional depth. Recording in low-fi was merely a calculated move to sound soulful and passionate (like old blues records). Many fell for it and as soon as their popularity grew, in came the slick manufacturing of their albums and videos. They are marketers and publicists before they are blues musicians.
ben laver Says:
May 30, 2012 - And as far as them not claiming to be blues musicians, that's obviously them trying to be abstract or something ridiculous like that, coz unfortunately they are blues musicians. The fact is blues music follows a fairly tight formula compared to other styles, but the black keys offer absolutely no creativity. Like you said they have no soul and it's just formulated pop at its simplest.Thankyou,You are the manthe above was from this site :cheesepaper.blogspot black-keys-and-why-they-suck
ben laver Says:
May 30, 2012 - Maybe that's the problem. It's pop music dressed up as indie or underground or whatever white hipster intellectuals want to call it to get as close to African American roots music as they can without having to listen to it. It's pop music with fuzzy sounding guitars It ain't special. It still has the emotional range and depth of a Britney Spears concert
ben laver Says:
May 30, 2012 - True story: I once said, "I like the blues" to someone and they wet their pants with glee. "I love the blues! My favorite band is the Black Keys!" This person was an accountant. Soullessness pervades that profession. The Black Keys would fit in well. Truth is, I never liked them. I suppose they're good at making non-pop pop music \I'm not saying all music has to be more than pop music, I'm just saying can't we all stop pretending that it isn't? Fuzzy guitars do not a good song make
ben laver Says:
May 30, 2012 - all those comments were found at a site called cheespaper, they were not mine. But, listening to the level of musicanshipp I can really say that this is typical indie wanking but with fuzz, the creativity and the ability to to speak thru the instruments is not there, Just sounds like souless video game music.****** If you did not see classic rock first hand, you would not know.*********Any power blues group from that era could take a song with song the the same notes and make it better
ben laver Says:
May 30, 2012 - its also not a good riff, is my pointListen to Obscured by clouds , song is Mudmen, for something along these lines but much better. The verse melody is also very banal, lyrics banal.
