Description:
Duke Ellington and his orchestra playing this awesome tune in 1943."It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" is a 1931 composition by Duke Ellington with lyrics by Irving Mills, now accepted as a jazz standard. The music was written and arranged by Ellington in August 1931 during intermissions at Chicago's Lincoln Tavern and was first recorded by Ellington and his orchestra for Brunswick Records (Br 6265) on February 2, 1932. Ivie Anderson sang the vocal and trombonist Joe Nanton and alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges played the instrumental solos. The title was based on the oft stated credo of Ellington's former trumpeter Bubber Miley, who was dying of tuberculosis. The song became famous, Ellington wrote, "as the expression of a sentiment which prevailed among jazz musicians at the time." Probably the first song to use the phrase "swing" in the title, it introduced the term into everyday language and presaged the Swing Era by three years. The Ellington band played the song continuously over the years and recorded it numerous times, most often with trumpeter Ray Nance as vocalist.

Apr 28, 2012 - Yeah, I love this generation and the technology advancements, but think of the class you're missing out on. Nobody is classy anymore. Nobody is respectful of anything anymore. I was sitting in class the other day, and the teacher put on some beautiful piano piece and everyone started saying it was horrible and was giving them headaches. I understand liking what kind of genre you like, but no one can understand things that are that real, because of the generation we live in.

Apr 30, 2012 - I think he was implying to how the current music industry is pretty corrupt and unchanging. It wasn't that long ago when we screwed up the music industry. There was NKC, MJ, Mick Jagger, Rolling Stones, and even RCHP. But look how many people even acknowledge their feat now.Same goes for the classical time. There are so many composers from so many eras. Half the people I know, generalizes the whole half of a millenium as the "classical era".

May 15, 2012 - I think if you show up in 1930s America you're going to find exactly 100% more social problems than you expect. First, every generation has proper men and sleazy men; and second, in what universe were women in the West respected more 80 years ago relative to today?I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I know this is Youtube u___u I'm done. That is all.

May 25, 2012 - It's def a gift and a curse for sure. It's created this Idiocracy we are living in where things can't hold people's attention for over 25 seconds, record labels say they can now tell a hit in the first 15 seconds, bullshit! So many good artists were around then because that was their internet, or outlet. I'd much rather have more of this kind of music existing than more programmers, thats just me personally though.
