Dec 17, 2011 - She is just "talking" the lyrics. Reba put "life" into this song and gave it a soul. Thank you Reba for giving this song the "life" it is worth and for giving Bobbie Gentry a nice royalty.... Bobbie says thank you Reba...

Jan 8, 2012 - shes known more for the stories she sings, they speak for themselves. reba does an amazing amazing cover, but it came from bobbie.
juliannaza Says:
Jan 26, 2012 - Really? Really? Not! Reba took this song and did this version cuz she loved it. And since everyone was Reba crazy at the time, it became her song!! Her first manager wouldn't let her do the song. When she got a new manager it was one of the first songs she did.

Jan 26, 2012 - So are you telling me she wasn't a Gentry fan? I really find that hard to believe.

Mar 31, 2012 - Yes Reba's song is the better version and I guess Bobbie Gentry is laughing all the way to bank with the money royalties!:)
Canadiankyosa Says:
Apr 15, 2012 - Bobby Gentry would not get any royalities for either of the covers of Bobbie's songs. They were public domain by the time Reba had done them. The same with Nights by Vicky. I feel all 4 versions were great songs no matter who recorded them.
MrFalconford Says:
Apr 17, 2012 - bravo
danielrdrown1 Says:
Apr 21, 2012 - They are not public domain. An artists estate gets 78 years on royalties before a song goes public and A.S.C.A.P and B.M.I are fighting to extend it to 100 . Vicki did not write"Nights" either, it was written by her first husband.. It is estimated Bobbie Gentry has received at least 5 million dollars in the last 25 years just from the songwriter royalties of Fancy and Ode to Billie Joe. Fancy has sold 25 million records. Ode to Billie Joe has over 100 covers and 50 million records sold.
Canadiankyosa Says:
Apr 22, 2012 - Public domain before 1978, in the U.S., was 25 years. It was changed to the same as here in Canada at that point. It is now 30 years after the death of the songwriter/last band member.
Canadiankyosa Says:
Apr 22, 2012 - Allegedly, some copyrights, in the U.S., before 1978 were extended to 2049 (I am unsure of that). For example, when the last member of the Beatles, Zeppelin, etc, die, the copyright will last for another 50 years. Another example is Bram Stoker's Dracula. It has been renewed because a sequel was recently written that renewed it. Also, a copyright holder may renew the copyright regularly so they do retain the right.
Canadiankyosa Says:
Apr 22, 2012 - Typo: 50 years, not 30.
danielrdrown1 Says:
Apr 23, 2012 - Your wrong. Joni Mitchell (Canadian) just talked in print about renewing her 1960's copyrights. I believe the artist is given 38 years and than a renewal for another 38. You don't have to believe me, just go th the A.S.C.AP website and they will inform you. I don't know about "after the death of the songwriter" but Bobbie Gentry is still very much alive.
kellybequine Says:
Apr 24, 2012 - Bobbie's great...but Reba made it better
Canadiankyosa Says:
Apr 24, 2012 - Works created in or after 1978 are extended copyright protection for a term defined in 17 U.S.C. § 302. With the passage of the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, these works are granted copyright protection for a term ending 70 years after the death of the author. If the work was a work for hire (e.g., those created by a corporation) then copyright persists for 120 years after creation or 95 years after publication, whichever is shorter.
Canadiankyosa Says:
Apr 24, 2012 - Check out American and Canadian copyright laws separately at wikipedia. They go into great detail. They also have the Canadian Copyright Act on there.
danielrdrown1 Says:
Apr 24, 2012 - That's the information I received too. So Ode to Billie Joe and 'Fancy will continue to provide income to Bobbie and her estate for many decades to come.
signspider Says:
May 3, 2012 - Back in the day it was a sin to lip sing and was done in rare situations. people worked hard back then and took pride in what they done. It all changed around the time MTV came to be, which is when lip singing became common place. Most young people today cant do anything but play vidio games !!!
