Dec 29, 2011 - If you look at the score for Magic Flute, Mozart wrote the two QOTN arias for a lyric coloratura; the piece is meant to be light. Regardless, Damrau is NOT a dramatic, she is a lyric with a heavy voice.

I'm sorry there is much debate about what Diana Damarau is and I've researched and mainly she is classified as a dramatic coloratura soprano because of the heaviness in her voice

I don't think she would dare try to sing something that is out of her range for fear of destroying her voice and she sings it very fast and the tempo hasn't been changed on the queen of the night aria and it's awesome when she sings.

Jan 29, 2012 - hmm really I just found an article on her website that states she is the world's leading coloratura, some coloraturas don't have to reach as high as others, yes she certainly doesn't have natalie dessay's ability to reach extreme high notes but then natalie dessay has a rare voice where she can reach such a high ability. She sang queen of the night very well and it's the most difficult aria to hit so maybe lakme isn't her forte but hey she gave it what she could

Jan 29, 2012 - Uh, no. Damrau has gone to G# - the highest note Dessay has done live is an A. Damrau has the extension, she doesn't have the agility. And no, in terms of the actual music, Damrau wasn't that good. Her F's were not that clear, what makes her QOTN standout is the acting.

Jan 29, 2012 - might want to to back and listen to natalie dessay sing les filles de cadix at the end she hit's a g6 and she has hit a g6 in other operas too. I know cause I found articles o her reaching a g6. I think they both sing quite well and can handle their repertoires very well and they don't go outside of them either which is why I think damarau has kept her voice intact and natalie had vocal surgery it may have changed her voice but she still sings well
