Mar 6, 2012 - Tattooing has been practiced for centuries in many cultures spread throughout the world. The Ainu, an indigenous people of Japan, traditionally had facial tattoos. Today one can find Berbers of Tamazgha (North Africa), Māori of New Zealand, Hausa people of Northern Nigeria, Arabic people in East-Turkey and Atayal of Taiwan with facial tattoos.
SuperGreatSphinx Says:
Mar 6, 2012 - Tattooing was widespread among Polynesian peoples and among certain tribal groups in the Taiwan, Philippines, Borneo, Mentawai Islands, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia, New Zealand and Micronesia. Indeed, the island of Great Britain takes its name from tattooing, with Britons translating as 'people of the designs' and the Picts, who originally inhabited the northern part of Britain, literally meaning 'the painted people'.
SuperGreatSphinx Says:
Mar 6, 2012 - British people remain the most tattooed in Europe. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular in many parts of the world.
SuperGreatSphinx Says:
Mar 6, 2012 - Since the 1990s, tattoos have become a mainstream part of global and Western fashion, common among both sexes, to all economic classes, and to age groups from the later teen years to middle age. By the 2010s, even the Barbie doll put out a tattooed Barbie in 2011, which was widely accepted, although it did attract some controversy. In 2010, a quarter (25%) of Australians under 30 had tattoos.
Gigabomber Says:
Mar 7, 2012 - Here's a stat for you Sphinx: 95% of tattoos in America are hideous and tattoos inherently don't age well, just like skin. 95% of people tattooed have to justify why they've permanently marked up their skin to everyone around them for good reason. Who cares about polynesians when I have talk to a bank teller with a hideous face tattoo? Oh, that's right, I don't, and because most tattoos are horrible and society doesn't even make me feel bad about it.

Mar 18, 2012 - Didn't the Picts get the name "the painted people" because they would paint their bodies with woad before battle though?
circlestrafe Says:
Mar 25, 2012 - Doesn't fucking mean we have to put up with idiots who make themselves uglier with disgusting tattoos all over their face. In fact, because it's mainstream, (according to you), is all the more reason NOT to put up with it. Lemmings=mainstream, or to put it more clearly, people who can't think for themselves, but follow the crowd.
circlestrafe Says:

SuperGreatSphinx Says:
Mar 6, 2012 - A tattoo is a form of body modification, made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. The first written reference to the word, "tattoo" (or Samoan "Tatau") appears in the journal of Joseph Banks, the naturalist aboard Captain Cook's ship the HMS Endeavour in 1769: "I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humor or disposition".
