Title: Helen Keller: In Her Story (clip)
Added: Sep 18, 2007
Author: phoenixfilmandvideo
Duration: 1:34
Description:
This is a simple, honest, tremendously moving saga, brought to the screen with the help of such notables as Katherine Cornell, Martha Graham and Dwight D. Eisenhower.Helen Keller, playing her own role, surpassed even the greatest actress, as she evoked the personal drama of her unique and dramatic story of courage, faith, perseverance and hope. Perhaps nothing better illustrates the power and eloquence of this remarkable film than one passage, haltingly spoken by Miss Keller in her partially developed voice: "It is not blindness or deafness that brings me my darkest hours. It is the acute disappointment of not being able to speak normally. Longingly I feel how much more good I could have done if I had acquired normal speech. But out of this dark experience I understand more fully all human strivings, thwarted ambitions and the infinite capacity of hope." Produced by Nancy Hamilton. Narrated by Katherine Cornell.Academy Award - Best Feature DocumentaryGolden Reel Award45 minutes, B/Wdirect link to purchase video:http://www.phoenixlearninggroup.com/Products/VideoDetail.aspx?id=2d82d281-233b-49e1-b13a-a916b4717f98&cat=&sub=

Sep 29, 2010 - @playmeh1994 I love how stuff is meant to mean deaf and dumb. You are funny. No I don't think raping someone would be good, but I think joking about raping someone is good.

Oct 28, 2010 - How the fuck could she possibly learn how to read?! And how could you learn those hand symbols if no one could talk to you and you can't see them? If I was her I would have given up on life

Nov 3, 2010 - My daughter and I have just read her book. What an amazing teacher Helen Keller had! And what an amazing student was Helen.
SoursNoodle Says:
Nov 5, 2010 - @iamkool12342 She feels the hand symbols. Her first word was doll, and she anne sullivan spelled D-O-L-L into her hand ash she felt a doll. SHe finnaly understood to language at the word "water" and she demanded to know the name of everthing she touched since then. As for reading, after learning hte hand symbols, she learned raised print, like letters that are 3-D and you can feel. Lastly, she learned brail, which is letters in the form of raised dots. I know all of this because I did a report
Uridien Says:
Nov 7, 2010 - I need to read about her more. I honestly don't know how they communicated with her to even teach her. How to teach someone who cannot see or hear, sign language? This should serve as a helpful reminder for myself the next time I get frustrated with something new and claim I can't learn it. The hell I can't!
deciog432 Says:
Nov 11, 2010 - @Elp35 if by inspirational you mean hilarious. The only inspiring thing Helen Keller did was permanently staple that stupid smile on her face to make her look like more of a joke. I am happy that evolution found the humor to create something so globally funny. Saying Helen Keller is one of the most inspirational people that have walked on earth makes you even more ignorant than she was, especially since it was unintentional for her. Even comparing her to people like Gandhi. Character Limit

Nov 15, 2010 - I can relate to this remarkable woman being half blind myself although I have never known what it feels like to be deaf or both deaf & blind. I do have this to say Helen Keller has been someone I have looked up to since the first moment I read about her!!!!!!!!!!!!!

List them rather than say that she is still famous only because of her facial expression.

Dec 2, 2010 - @Uridien Ann sullivan communicated with helen keller through manual alphabet,a sign language she traced in her palms. You can read it in "the story of my life, the book she wrote as a young girl. Before graduating cum laude from radcliffe college.
jaytalex10 Says:
Dec 4, 2010 - @zahab111 Thats incorrect... Your confusing 3 different teaching methods... She first made the connection of language when Ms. Sullivan was running her hand under a stream of water and finger spelled the word water into Helen's other hand using the manual alphabet (each letter is represented by a different handshape). She later learned to write these letters and then learned to speak verbally by putting her hand on her teacher's mouth and copying what she felt.
