Apparently the root word 'fuck', is derived from 15th and 16th century low and middle German and Swedish, usually meaning to strike, hit, or actually copulate. The "WTF" term is generally considered to be a 40's term, as an intensifier to show shock, or dismay. It didn't officially make it into the OED until 1972, but in the area of scatology, official dictionaries are decades, if not centuries, 'behind the curve'.
