I think he saw people being murdered by theocracies long before the Americans cared, and then performed the 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' dance with Bush - He didn't support Bush for the same reasons the American people did going into Iraq. Someone who cared less about people would've wanted the US to stay out of Iraq to keep Iran in check - with Kurds and Shia's in Iraq being murdered daily. The man cared about all people. RIP Hitch.
