May 16, 2012 - I agree, even though I am a drummer. But I base my opinion on seeing hundreds of bands over the years. The drummer has more control than anyone else in the band in making the music flow (or not flow). If you have a drummer that plays erratic, the music will sound erratic. If you have a drummer that plays smooth (i.e. grooves), the music will sound smooth and groove. Pretty simple, really.

Also, I'm more of a 60's guy than a 70's guy, which were worlds apart in regards to drumming. I think you'd have a hard time improving Stones and Beatles recordings by simply subbing in Neil Peart or Carmine Appice, you know?
