Title: Paul McCartney teaches bass

Added: Dec 5, 2007

Author: Rickdd2

Duration: 3:15

Description:
The Bass Master himself teaches a little of his playing technique in this "fair use" excerpt from a promo vid for his latest album (you can buy the full video at nowplayit.com).I think it's interesting because of the closeups showing his fingering style. Also interesting I think is even though it's "very simple" root notes, he still slips in little flourishes to give it some shape, like at 00:51 where he goes C-"F"-D (instead of straight C-D), and how he slides down from F-E at 01:07 keeping the string open instead of muffled like the rest. The most interesting part though I think is his discussion at 02:27 of how he was "tempted" to put in "fiddly bits" at the one part -- jumping up an octave -- and why you might do that if you're feeling "adventurous." I guess that's what musicianship is all about, when to do things like that and when to show restraint (he didn't do it in the final mix).

kirchfam Says:

Mar 31, 2012 - Couldn't he just play an open string on the A?

Apr 4, 2012 - I love Paul McCartney! He's simply just the coolest person ever. :) I wish I was born in the Beatles era...

Apr 4, 2012 - That bass is going to be worth the same as ten houses in Beverly Hills after Paul's gone...

NittanyLionz89 Says:

Apr 4, 2012 - Paul McCartney and The Beatles were the reason I picked up the bass in 3rd grade and now I'm in my school's jazz ensemble and I was in a few "attempted" garage bands so I want to say thank you to Paul for encouraging me to never give up my musical dreams.

Apr 11, 2012 - Bass is the best without the bass the whole song would just sound hollow

plasmakevin Says:

Apr 13, 2012 - He rarely uses open strings because it has more sustain and is more top heavy than the rest of the notes in the line.

Apr 17, 2012 - The Beatles is classic rock. If anyone ever had any doubts about how great the Beatles are, they just need to forget what they don't like and listen to Abbey Road with an open mind. Please consider my advice. Peace.

fatleader Says:

May 18, 2012 - Very true, but I think it really just boils down to the attention and commercial success these guys get. As saddening as it is, Weather Report never really reached big fame as The Beatles did.

nathalia301 Says:

May 19, 2012 - THE KING!!!

Jwk1706 Says:

May 22, 2012 - Because McCartney is known for his song writing, and the fact that he was in one of the most popular bands ever. Not everyone is interested in bass virtuosos like Pastorius and Wooten. Also, Jazz, Fusion, Funk etc doesnt quite have the same large fan base as pop

zatan130 Says:

May 26, 2012 - Yeah, I agree, but still, "Something" has a rather complex bass line, as does "Oh! Darling" and "Lovely Rita.

tattooheath Says:

May 29, 2012 - Too bad the real McCartney died back in '66.
