Added: Nov 18, 2010

Author: AllanGregg

Duration: 27:1

Description:
How does addiction change the brain? According to Dr. Gabor Mate, it's a difficult struggle for hard core drug addicts to kick their habit because their brains are impaired. In a new book, he looks at the common roots of addictive behaviours and what can be done about them. It's called "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction".

Users are not procecuted , we focus on educating ppl rather than telling what not to do , long term addicts can get clean needles under supervision etc. Look up the statistics on drug related problems in Holland and tyne US...

Jan 22, 2012 - My son Sean died at age 22 from his ADD medicine Ritalin that he became addicted to. I think my divorce hurt him, and his shame of this supid label ADD and later an addict were too much for him to bear, yet he went for help and we have nothing to do to help them except lie to them. Rehab is only good for 20-30% for 1 year. Please stay away from these addictive ADHD drugs. I think we need to do more research to save lives. Brain scans help. Google the Study on Ritalin by Dr Yong Kim of the NIDA.

Feb 20, 2012 - ...finally, an intelligent, SANE, compassionate approach to human pain, and addiction. This guy needs to be required study in every psych. and counselling course. Dr Maté understands suffering, and its origens, incredibly compassionate and perceptive - he also appears in Zeitgeist Moving Forward, talking about how it is environment which is the ultimate determinant of whether or not a gene is expressed (also ref. Dr. Bruce Lipton, The Biology of Belief).

ryanh206 Says:

Feb 28, 2012 - I love what he says, it's all so true. I'm a recovering heroin and crack addict. Though Dr Gabor does need to start talking about IBOGAINE as an addiction detox option with close to an 80% success rate. I did it and it saved my life. It resets your neural pathways. If interested please contact me - I can put you in contact with an ibogaine clinic.

Mar 4, 2012 - why is stuff like this not on tv in england...it would be very educational fuck the ratings

Newbunkle Says:

Mar 10, 2012 - He has an interesting point about people blaming themselves. It makes me think of the just-world fallacy which is shared by many anxious people. The fortunate use it to blame others for their own suffering as a way of feeling safer. The thing is, the unfortunate also blame themselves, because they ultimately want to believe they have control over everything that happens to them. Their self-hate is unhealthy but necessary for them to feel they can end their pain. A lack of control frightens them.

account98 Says:

Mar 15, 2012 - agreed, at least we have the internet

HS22181 Says:

Apr 10, 2012 - Dr. Nora Volkow's brain imagining studies is the definitive work on how addiction works. She says that pathological changes to brain structure make it very difficult for addicts to give up their addictions. She has shown that abnormalities in the prefrontal cortex of addicts create a feeling of need or craving that addicts know is irrational but cannot prevent.

Apr 15, 2012 - thank u peter joseph 4 showing me these ideas, jaque fresco`s and dr gabor`s...

SovereignBeing Says:

Apr 26, 2012 - Refined white sugar is as addictive as crack cocaine, try and get off that in all forms, including sugars found in fruits, carbs, alcohol and grains, and you will know all about addiction.and how your mind is controlled by it, how candida and parasites speak to you and literally order you to get your fix somehow...

georgiypotulov23 Says:

May 6, 2012 - Has this guy not heard of ayahuasca or salvia divinorum? There are many herbs that can be tools to help drug addicts look deeply within themselves. I wish the guy with mention about that part.

georgiypotulov23 Says:

May 6, 2012 - If their brain is impaired then how will they become normal, by being powerless? That all sounds way too much like the 12 step program..And I know how ineffective that was in my life. I will tell you, ibogain, saivia, lsd, and ayahuasca will get any drug addict to quit after a couple of experiences..

GaiaWarrior3 Says:

May 6, 2012 - im glad you mentioned that, check out "The jungle Prescription - Film Trailer". It a full length doc on his exp with ayahuasca and treating addicts with it. That video actually led me here. I do agree with you, 12 step doesn't work for many ppl, such as myself. I think you'll like that film

TheOioink Says:

May 14, 2012 - It's been proven that any 12 step programs have less than 1% of people attending after just 30 days. They fail but they will just tell you that it doesn't work for everyone. LOL

fromonesoultoanother Says:

May 25, 2012 - I was one of those people that always believed every addict made their choice and therefore had to pay the consequence. After listening to a few of Dr Mate's seminars/lectures I have to credit him for enlightening me. There is just no denying that what he has to say makes perfect sense. Thank you Dr. Mate' for opening my eyes and my heart.

dentaldickwad Says:
