We also call them base 10 and base 8, respectively.So by saying that dec 25 == oct 31, one could be saying that 25 decimal == 31 octal, or that christmas == halloween. Therefore, programmers get christamas and halloween mixed up because 25 dec is exactly the same as 31 oct.This joke appeals more to older programmers(hexadecimal is more common today) and mathematicians.
