Jan 22, 2011 - Great social insight by Rodgers and Hammerstein. If everyone could remember back into their early childhood, they'd remember having to be taught hate and prejudice. Then maybe they'd give it up.

Feb 16, 2011 - This song always stuns me. It's about 30 seconds long, and sums the whole thing up.I don't know why people think it's "hidden" though - South Pacific is a very anti-racist play, right from the opening.
TheGrey720 Says:
May 14, 2011 - Eat this racism! Pew pew pew!
Onegurrrlrev Says:
Jun 26, 2011 - Whoever wrote it was ahead of their time.
Sshelly34213 Says:
Jun 26, 2011 - I don't know, really thinking about what generation specifically had a problem with racism? JFK's generation who fought in WW2 was the one who allowed civil rights to occur and yet have been unfairly cast in an oppressive light for 50 years. Eisenhower was from a generation even older than the WW2 generation. So I don't think it was really "ahead of its time" as much as it seems from what culture pre-60s has been portrayed as.
Sshelly34213 Says:
Jun 26, 2011 - I've noticed in cinema or tv, you always see the 50s portrayed as either evil and oppressive, or some golden era of America. In reality I think it was ahead of its time to the adults who remembered pre WW2 America and behind the times to those who didn't.

Mar 22, 2012 - This song changed my life!! I remember watching South Pacific as a young child andrealizing that my relatives were prejudiced after hearing these lyrics. "My" relatives wantedme to "hate all the people" that they hated! NO, NO, not happening.......WE have the powerto stop this nonsense...........! I wish our children would hear this song once a week to stopprejudice...;-)

Apr 24, 2012 - Great lyrics! No one sings it like Mandy P. his phrasing, pitch, & articulation are superb!
cautleen Says:
Apr 25, 2012 - I don't think so. In the context of the movie, South Pacific, it was the discouraged and frustrated response of a man who felt he could not cross what was then seen as an interracial divide in order to marry the woman he loved. It was an early movie statement against prejudice, and so I would see it as an anti-Tea Party anthem. It was a pretty strong statement for its day.
