Added: Mar 31, 2010

Author: ANUchannel

Duration: 65:56

Description:
Which way do comets tails face? Does dark matter exist? Where did the universe come from and what is it made of? What's at the end of the universe? Dr Paul Francis discusses some of the 'greatest unsolved mysteries of the universe' at The Australian National University on 31 March 2010.This talk will explore the greatest unsolved problems of modern astrophysics, describe why they are hard, and discuss the efforts being made to solve them.Paul Francis is an astronomer at The Australian National University. He conducts research on comets, quasars, high redshift galaxies, and novel interactive teaching techniques. He grew up in London, studied at Cambridge and has worked with the Steward Observatory in Tucson, Arizona, with the University of Melbourne, and has been based at ANU since 1997.

Apr 18, 2012 - We can barely make out whole planets a mere 20 light years away. Civilizations? We just don't have the tools at the moment to confirm things one way or another, except by sheer chance.

omarlives Says:

Apr 19, 2012 - When did The Big Bang take place?

mlgprox1 Says:

Apr 22, 2012 - Where did this info that created everything we see come from?..."nowhere"? So where did your god come from. We could just as easily say that the info used to create intelligent life was always there. nothing created it, it came from nowhere... just like your god.

Apr 25, 2012 - GRAVITATION SINGULARITY ???

Apr 26, 2012 - "I say that becouse we alredy see 5500 light years away but we didn't see any other civilizations" There is a new word I want you to learn: non sequitur.

May 3, 2012 - Our space/time began at the moment of the Big Bang....so we know how long again it banged but at the catalyst it was at what the scientific community call time zero...

Havok259 Says:

May 3, 2012 - Up in you.

PMW3 Says:

May 5, 2012 - nothing moves faster than the speed of light, except for this mans jaw from time to time

cleon24769 Says:

May 6, 2012 - The Science channel says stars can supernova in a single second or less. I'm pretty sure that's at least one thing faster than the speed of light.

fiendin281 Says:

May 8, 2012 - hopefully not.

gettheleadoutasshole Says:

May 9, 2012 - There was no big bang, it's still only one theory, just like the unified field and gravity

AnimatedBlip Says:

May 10, 2012 - Gravity is just a theory? What's your theory on everyone sticking to the ground then?

vince424 Says:

May 14, 2012 - I actually have a problem with the big bang theory. After space, time and gravity were created, even the shortest time after the explosion, the dense mass should have imploded under its own gravity forming a black hole, ust like an exploding heavy star. Using as a total mass in the universe 10^54 kg and 2GM/c^2 for the calculation of the event horizon (non spinning), The total universe should be a black hole with an event horizon of about 7*10^12 lightyears. Why is this not the case?

May 17, 2012 - haaaaaaaa what a reply powww think u owned him lol

Airisuwolf666 Says:

May 18, 2012 - Wouldn't the inflation theory explain that?

David Daniels Says:

May 20, 2012 - The big bang did happen but it was not the event that created space and time, It was merely a small chemical reaction compared to the rest of the universe. Also, energy does not travel in wave, but rather it travels in contractions and expansions, mini big bangs and big crunches if you will. The speed of light is relative to the thing observing it. On higher plains of existence light travels about 15 trillion trillion times faster then we see it. Same with time. Its all relative to the observer.

ecarrace100 Says:

May 22, 2012 - Gravity is proven fact, not a theory.

southrules Says:

May 27, 2012 - Well, actually, you do realize even Einstein can't explain the many contradictions between the Newtonian definition of gravity and quantum mechanics. Basically one or the other are wrong so they are theoretical. Personally, I stick to the Earth because of an over consumption of generals chicken from Egg Roll Chin.
