Duration: 3:49
Description:
The Patriot Game, written by Dominic Behan and sung by Liam Clancy. The song tells the story of Fergal O'Hanlon, a 1950's IRA Volunteer from Ballybay, County Monaghan, who achieved fame for taking part in an attack on Brookeborough Royal Ulster Constabulary barracks in County Fermanagh on 1 January 1957. O'Hanlon was killed in the attack at the age of 20. This incident took place during the IRA's "Border Campaign" (1956 - 1962). ----------------Come all ye young rebels, and list while I sing,For the love of one's country is a terrible thing. It banishes fear with the speed of a flame,And it makes us all part of the patriot game.My name is O'Hanlon, and I've just turned sixteen. My home is in Monaghan, where I was weaned.I learned all my life cruel England to blame,And so I'm part of the patriot game. It's barely two years since I wandered away,With the local battalion of the bold IRA,I've read of our heroes, and I wanted the same,To play out my part in the patriot game. This island of ours has too long been half free;Six counties are under John Bull's tyranny. So I gave up my boyhood to drill and to trainTo play my own part in the patriot gameAnd now as I lie here, my body all holes I think of those traitors who bargained and soldAnd I wish that my rifle had given the same To those Quislings who sold out the patriot game.

Feb 14, 2011 - "He was just the best ballad singer I ever heard in my life. Still is, probably." BOB DYLAN (speaking of Liam Clancy)

Feb 25, 2011 - Great song, Bob Dylan uses it for "With God on Our Side," he steals the melody and then parodies the lyrics, but the gist is sympathetic: antiwar. The Patriot Game was written in the late fifties by Behan in response to the deaths of Sean South and Feargal O'Hanlon, on a raid across the Irish boder Jan. first,1957. Source: Dominic Behan's book "Ireland Sings."

Feb 28, 2011 - this is not some kind of anthem supporting any cause, this is a lament paying tribute to naive young men dying for silly territory lines and titles. this song is so anti-violence, how fucking daft do you need to be to consider this some kind of fist pumping rebel anthem. this is a song that yearns for peace and an end to pointless deaths of young men. o'hanlan suffered and died horribly, stop the madness.

Sep 24, 2011 - thats what I always believed, but unfortunately not everyone "gets it". People like the Clancys and the Dubliners were NOT sectarian they were pretty pro-peace you know?
Thuglordrpt Says:
Nov 20, 2011 - Funny you should say that because it was wrote by a volunteer of the Irish Republican Army. Of course peole degenerate this to sideline the political views they dont agree with.

Jan 2, 2012 - I thought they were Dungannon barracks....in another songbook it said that it was May, not January....but in the Sean South song, it also says it was new years.....this song is only about 55 years old, but there's already problems with dates since it's already so famous

May 6, 2012 - Plan b 198, you're dead right about Dylan ripping this off for WGOOS, but Dylan is one of the biggest rip off artists of all time! Still like his music and lyrics though.
LessIsMoor Says:
May 26, 2012 - Don't you think "ripping this off ..." is a bit over the top? This is a folk song and putting new lyrics on top of old folk melodies was nothing new back then. As matter of fact, Dylan even presented his new version of this, and other songs that he had heard the Clancy Bro's and Tommy M sing, to Liam Clancy, and received his approval. Changing lyrics or borrowing the melody was an accepted folk music tradition.
