Nov 5, 2009 - If only these guys could have stayed together I was fortunate to catch them in Austin at a outdoor festival. They were wonderful. Its hard to believe about Robbie and all the bad blood between rhem. I dont know....I still celebrate trheir music.

Jan 19, 2010 - It's too bad there aren't more live versions of this song. I love the songs where Richard, Levon and Rick all get a part. Garth's dumb 70's synth/organ really asses this version up. It's sick otherwise.

Feb 12, 2010 - The Band are the only group that can sing about wood, dogs and cooking and still sound COOL!

Mar 5, 2010 - Nice live version, 70s synth and all, of one of the Band's greatest. Tragic, sad, hopeful and loving.

Free1108 Says:

Mar 7, 2010 - Richard sobered up for a while and I think when he was touring in '83 was at least part of that time. He did sound good. He was so sad in '76 during Last Waltz and even sadder was that Robbie and Scorsese refused to let him be a part of the movie. He was a pure soul with tortured demons...a truly beautiful person. He fell off the wagon sometime thereabouts or right after that '83 tour and was never able to get it together again. Bless you dear Richard.

Apr 15, 2010 - I'm not sure there is one....I worked with this guy who played lead guitar in a band...dad was a musician as well....anyway....I told him one day I had seen about a hundred Grateful Dead shows....he scoffed and said the Grateful Dead couldn't sniff the shorts of the Band. Or something along that line. And his dad played/opened for Jerry Garcia. He was arrogant and opinionated with his Les Paul.

Apr 6, 2011 - this has been my favorite song for 35 yrs. I knew nothing of the story before I heard this and I tear up every time I hear it. History repeats itself with other people in other places which makes the song even stronger...

May 23, 2011 - @mcdstuff I know he was in Waltz. I didn't make myself clear. Robbie/Scorsese did not include footage of him performing many of his songs; not even the final "I Shall Be Released". The film concentrated on Robbie; his guitar (and switched-off mike ;-) None of the other members of The Band were given the credit they should have gotten. At the premier Ronnie Hawkins was heard to say "Was Richard still in the group when this was done?" for all to hear. Read Levon's book "This Wheels On Fire".

Jul 11, 2011 - Sigh...if ONLY they'd stayed together. Richard could've dried up (Robbie was right that the road took a toll - on him especially - no excuse for RR to break up the Band). Anyway he could've dried up, they could've only toured occasionally w/ time for solo projects and occasional Band albums.Instead, Richard fell back into drinking and hung himself. Rick ballooned in the 90s and bit it. Levon nearly died of cancer, Garth...well, stayed Garth, and Robbie...never fixed his mistake.

IViewMusic Says:

Feb 18, 2012 - This is not what the title says it is. Technical mishap? Or has the uploader typed in '1976' by mistake twice?

brian600lyle Says:

Feb 21, 2012 - This is from 1976, its from New Yorks "Palladium" it was one of the final shows pre last waltz..it was recorded for a radio broadcast..look it up.

brian600lyle Says:

Feb 21, 2012 - I think they should of stayed together atleast just taking time and making some studio albums, and if things turned around they could of did a tour or something..

rakeuiff Says:

Apr 9, 2012 - Unfortunately your wrong , I heard early in The Band's fame that Richard was a constant problem drug and alcohol wise from the early days on., Rick ballooned up because he had had an unpublicized motor cycle accident around the same time as Dylan and was always plagued by pain and was on steroids for it at that time and steroids can do that!

traininvain7 Says:

Apr 9, 2012 - I never said it wasn't, I just meant he could've tried to sober up. I read that he eventually did some rehab in the early 80s before relapsing. And yeah, I knew of Rick's accident, although I thought it was in a car. I guess the steroids eventually just caught up with him.Still it'd be amazing to one day see RR, Levon, and Garth together as a one-off. Levon can't sing much anymore (the other two aren't great either), but musically it'd still kick ass - esp. with Levon's band backing them up.

LordoftheJimmy Says:

Apr 19, 2012 - Man listen to Levon! R.I.P. Levon, you will never be forgotten!

smn9ac Says:

Apr 20, 2012 - Who is the one guy who doesn't like this????

claytonave Says:

May 14, 2012 - There is a song on Basement Tapes listed as 'Open the door Homer' but sung as 'Open the door Richard' due to the behaviour of Richard who they had a hard time getting to comeout of his room. That was the story back then, watch him in the interviews on Last Waltz and he behaves very odd. He has tragedy in his voice. Whispering Pines for instance. Another paradox and such a shame in the music world.

IViewMusic Says:

May 24, 2012 - Right now I have no idea what made me write that first comment. There is, as far as I can hear, nothing in there suggesting it isn't '76. I stand corrected.
