Title: Cutting Down an Old FIr
Added: Nov 11, 2008
Author: grufrock
Duration: 5:48
Description:
This old tree is at a local golf course. Due to several large limbs falling onto the course and other safety concerns we cut it down, leaving a 50' habitat snag. The golf course that the tree was on required a habitat snag left of at least 10 meters, otherwise it would have changed the layout of the fairway, making the hole easier. Also the only corridor to fall the tree into would have required felling (and cleaning up) a half dozen other 160' firs, meaning climbing and piecing it down was the faster option. The climb only took about 5.5 hours. Music: Editors - The Racing Rats

Nov 12, 2011 - some of the big firs that grew near Snoqualmie Washington were 300 to 400 feet tall. A news paper from 1921 shows a climber topping a spar tree at 275 ft, and the top looks like it is 60 to 80 feet tall. That was standard growth big timber in the old woods of that era.

Nov 20, 2011 - I really like the vids. But why drown everything in heavily compressed rock music? Have to turn it off completely.I would much prefer listening to the roar of the chain saw and listening to your comments as you are working!Peace

Mar 15, 2012 - Excellent job, it's always funny when jackasses on youtube tell someone they could do it better when in reality they have no training or skills whatsoever. Armchair Arborists!Once again, Amazing job @grufrock

Mar 19, 2012 - Looked like maybe he was using an ms 088 on that log. That's the real deal their. A little bit way bigger than these oaks out here, some I've been using my 27'' cs8000 that's it so far. I think I'm getting tired of taking down all these oaks that are grown over everyone's home but it has to be done i guess.

May 8, 2012 - OMG ! I took down some big trees. Been 60' up in a tree with a bee-hive hole and 45" around where i was cutting, but never anything on the scale of this beast. Nice job. Huge tree. Huge balls !!~

thekettle2 Says:
May 13, 2012 - you would, but, he was using it at arms length and the chains on the tophandled saws are design to reduce the chance of kick back, so its unlikely it will ever happen

Oct 20, 2011 - Holy crap that is a forest GIANT. Was it 8 feet diameter at breast height? If it was 160 ft to a blown top, and the top looks like it still retains 3 to 4 feet thickness one could estimate it was originally 75 to 120 feet taller, or 250 to 300 feet tall, also it looks like those bottom branches don't start till 150'. I've read old reports from the 19th century which describe trees 250 feet as average timber Vancouver, and Lynn Valley. some allegedly reached 352, even 415 ft.
