May 24, 2012 - Ants are sort of amazing. In terms of biomass, there's more ants on Earth than everything in the sea combined. What really blows my mind about social insects though is that hives are, in a sense, individuals rather than colonies: they're all clones with specialised purposes, like the cells in our bodies. They're just not physically connected. Flipped around: we're just hives of cells. What is an individual?
