Title: Albert Bandura, Social Learning and his Bobo Doll experiment
Added: Nov 23, 2009

Duration: 5:27
Description:
I created this video in 2008 to accompany a presentation entitled "Beyond the Playground." My presentation was about bullying and its effects. I focused on Albert Bandura's social learning theory which states individuals, especially children, learn aggressive responses from observing others, either personally or through the media and environment. He stated that many individuals believed that aggression will produce reinforcements. These reinforcements can formulate into reduction of tension, gaining financial rewards, or gaining the praise of others, or building self-esteem (Siegel, 1992: p.171) Bandura focused his studies on aggression. His Bobo doll experiment is his most famous and was conducted in the early 1960s. In this experiment, Bandura found that children were more likely to beat the hell out of an inflatable clown doll if they had observed someone else doing it. They were also drawn to a toy gun in the room.Music: "Making Me Sick" Bash & Pop and "Clowns are Experts (At making us laugh)" The VandalsVideo: savevid.com

Oct 5, 2010 - Actually, you neglect to mention, and you mislead, by saying that children change behavior regardless of consequence. That was not true. Two sets of children were shown two sets of experiments. One in which the aggressor was rewarded as a hero, the other where the aggressor was punished. Children were more likely to model the behavior when they viewed the strong champion version as opposed to the disciplined aggressor.

Oct 5, 2010 - This is the original experiment with his original findings. Bandura performed it several more times with variations and yes, children were more likely to model the behavior, but even when the aggressor was punished, they still modeled the behavior. In THIS video, the children changed their behavior regardless.

Nov 16, 2010 - Thanks for putting the info in the video. Writing a paper for my criminology class and had to pick a theory we covered and this was one of them. Really helpful to see it so I can use my own words.

Jan 3, 2011 - Is this the original experiment?its terrifying how much the behavior of that kids depends on what someone features them...but i dont think its the right point of view to handle children.ok, but thats not what psychology is made for(i hope my english is not too scary ^^)

Jan 6, 2011 - Now imagine what the mass media is showing children... What kind of behavior is promoted in ads as well as TV shows and movies... Food for thought

Mar 28, 2011 - The only critique of the experiment I have is that the doll is FUN to beat up. Watch it bounce back! I wonder if the persistent violence would be different if it were a different object? It's a clown. It weebles and it woobles! If it were just some random 2-dimensional figure that the children themselves had to stand back up in order to beat back down again, I wonder if the outcome would be any different. Just a thought. ;)
LaTeaDie Says:
Apr 12, 2011 - You're correct, but the difference between the two, especially for males is not that large.
Imgareth92 Says:
Apr 20, 2011 - The idea of a bobo doll is to beat it up. This experiment would work miles better with a large teddy bear, or some kind of desirable toy, like a teddy bear, that most really young kids would normally have no desire to beat up. That would show how impressionable they are.
poetgrrl23 Says:
Apr 20, 2011 - Don't forget, Bandura is looking at novel acts of aggression - not necessarily what was modeled for them.

NeeNaBeeNa Says:
May 1, 2011 - I think that the children beating up the clown isn't all just based on what the woman did in the beginning. Do you see how fun it looks to hit that thing down and have it bounce right back up again? I think there are several things that have not been taken into account with this experiment.
lampard554 Says:
May 15, 2011 - this doesn't mean much, the bobo doll is designed to be hit. plus, it's not even a real person so the results can't be generalised to aggression towards humans.
Jessicurr2 Says:
May 28, 2011 - As far as the variations go, when Bandura showed punishment and reward, I just read that the children did not attack the bobo doll, but when asked to repeat what they saw, they could.
