Aug 23, 2009 - Most of the casting stroke is done with your arm. As I said you have to know how to use the wrist. Bending the wrist on the back cast does lead to wide loops. Not allowing the wrist to go past the straight position on the back cast will prevent this. Most often tailing loops are caused by applying the power too early, before the rod is properly loaded. Accuracy is accomplished by forming tight loops. The locked wrist method has been taught for years, leading to many injuries, Lefty Kreh

AlvinDedeaux Says:

Aug 23, 2009 - has been casting with his right arm for years because of wrist problems. He was (is?) a big fan of the locked wrist. I got my first fly rod over 33 years ago. I did attend a Joan Wulff fly casting instructors school about 15 years ago. She knows more about fly casting than most and she teaches her students to use a wrist snap at the end of the stroke. Like you said though whatever works for you. The object is to have fun and catch fish. However you want to do it.

Sep 23, 2009 - i know this is a bad demonstration

Jan 13, 2010 - Who cares how the fly gets out there as long as its there and the fish still take the fly , I have been fly fishing for at least five years or more and i have watched over 50 different videos on how to cast a fly line and you know what, evey one of them got a different way of casting the fly , differnt tech from thier point .if your getting the fly out there and having fun while doing it then whats wrong with that, were not to beet the longest cast ,just to catch fish.

Feb 28, 2010 - .Casting is pretting basic. Mending is essential to present a drag free fly. single and double haul OK. Learn to read the water. Top to bottom.

alright4u Says:

Feb 28, 2010 - I am starting to enjoy. Can all of critics, me included, agree to take a kid fly fishing? Many of us know places where a kid could catch a decent 12-14" trout withouty endangering the child/teen/ young man/lady. We have spent years learning this. My father taught me in 1954. I do owe a lot to this sport. I live in Nashville now,

Trouttaranaki Says:

Apr 23, 2010 - So SO true! Well said!

alright4u Says:

May 4, 2010 - Mending line for a drag free presentaion is great, but; streamers are used for action. Now, I made a peace offering. Try wading with bullet wounds in your leg. I will take an injured wrist any day.

May 22, 2010 - a big part of fly fishing for me is the casting ... i find it relaxing and fun.. i think to many people just wanna Catch Fish and not learn about the casting side of fly fishing. I think the better one casts the better his chances of catching a fish are.

Jun 20, 2010 - hi, Alvin! I am a flyfishing beginner, when i try to throw the line out and make it land in a straight line on the water it stops in the air and falls down landing with very much line on one place! what am i doing wrong?

Gilbs2211 Says:

Jun 28, 2010 - Jesus, camera man pan back so we can see everything, not just his line going out...

dookiekong007 Says:

Sep 13, 2010 - you clearly expressed the kind of unappreciation to this type of fishing. who doesn't like catching fish but every once in a while, everyone gotta respect the skills required by these rods, it's the beauty in fly fishing, exactly why we have it in the first place. It's an art

flytyier11 Says:

Sep 14, 2010 - I appreciate fly fishing very much my friend , I spend all winter at the vice just so i can do just that. To someone who is out to catch fish yes there is some skills required but they are not nessesaraly needed right from the start.Like i said before , everyone will develope thier own tech for fly casting , some like the double haul some like the single ,some like the roll ,ans some just want to cast a line to have fun doing it.Trust me i enjoy my fly fishing .

flytyier11 Says:

Sep 14, 2010 - I agree that casting is a big part of it but what i want to say is that one dosn't realy need to be a expert caster to enjoy the fish. I too enjoy the casting part but i also enjoy hooking a fish once in a while too. Put someone on a pool and have them stay there all day casting thier arms off with no fish they soon loose thier interest, but put them thier when the fish are there they seem to cain interest in it much faster and want to keep learning and casting beter .

JokiBroki Says:

Sep 17, 2010 - When nymphing or streamers/bugger fishing casting is just 5 percent of the whole thing. When dry fly fishing, casting is very important as you want to cast where you see the fish picking up flies. Anyway when nymphing your number one priority is the presentation of that fly. It needs to be presented as live as possible, which means NO DRAG! Same rule goes for dry fly fishing where there should be NO DRAG! Presentation is the key to success!

Grayfisher1 Says:

Oct 10, 2010 - More people need to take castingcourses!.so they learn how to cast, then you got the hole life to practise casting.you catch so so very mutch more fish if you can cast for them where they are standing ,expesialy bigger trout.Put your ego aside and take some advice from somebody who nows.I see so meny people fishing whit fly and hardly ever catching fish mostly the dond no where the fish stand and second, they scare them so far avay and then cant cast that far!If you take it seriously LEARN

mobstamaniac Says:

Oct 23, 2010 - 90% of my fish are caught within 60ft. You don't have to be able to cast the whole flyine out (although it can help sometimes =p), you just need good presentation and loops on your normal fishing casts. And the way to get good consistency with your casts is practise, so go fishing more. Lots more =]

boiprof Says:
