Feb 10, 2011 - I added a comment about particle render types, why the hardware-render types won't render with the software renderer, but it was an inaccurate statement because they do render with mental ray (which is a software renderer). If you want to use the hardware renderer for the particles instead, you'll probably want to render your scene separately and then the particles in their own images; set the "Enable Geometry Mask" attribute in the hardware renderer to create a hold-out matte for the geometry.
