Title: Climbing Fall.avi

Added: Dec 6, 2008

Author: sassafras1232

Duration: 0:52

Description:
I put a smallish cam (.5 or .75 max cam) into a (bad) downward flaring placement and took onto it. The cam blew and the rope hooked my leg. The next piece was a good nut that held. The climb is Pope's Crack in Joshua Tree.

Jan 9, 2011 - sorry, this guy shouldn't be climbing at least leading...he's going to hurt himself.

ceebo100 Says:

Jan 10, 2011 - And that, is why i will never trad climb o0. It is too expensive.. you spend too long trying to get the balls to climb at your absolute limit. And no matter how experianced you are.. the dice is ALWAyS rolling on a career ending fall, if not death. Perhaps that is the apeal to those who love trad climbing?. I just like to lead bolted routes.. and enjoy the climb free of life ending errors.

Jan 31, 2011 - Saved the rack though!!

Breanniefannie Says:

Feb 21, 2011 - From all of the climbers who will have to save your ass next year: Please stop climbing, let alone leading, trad when you have bad basic skills. Go climb sport, learn about foot placement with the rope, buy a helmet, then go beg some actual trad climbers to let you follow them up pitches - lots of pitches. Once you see constant good placement you will NEVER place a crap piece like that again. Just because you have enough money for a rack doesn't mean you should be doing it...

pg78ify Says:

Feb 25, 2011 - There's no such thing as safety in climbing. If you think wearing a helmet is going to save your skinny ass from splashing your brain all over your belayer -- you're wrong. If you believe sport climbs are bomb-proof, and you can clip from bolt to bolt and feel all warm and cosy -- you're wrong. I've seen people ripping off 8 bolts off a chossy sandstone and breaking their back: perhaps the last thing they thought before turning into veggies was "hey, it was supposed to be safe!..."

Mar 27, 2011 - You've seen someone pull 8 bolts out?? Im gonna call BS on that one. Unless you can tell me when and where this unprecedented whipper took place. And im gonna have to say that wearing a helmet is ALWAYS safer than not.

ebsuku Says:

Mar 28, 2011 - good job belayer, should have told him about his foot....

go2cloudbase Says:

Apr 1, 2011 - No big deal, this climb is above or outside of your lead climbing skill set, that's all. If you have to take on every piece then you probably shouldn't be leading it and would benefit more from toproping it, or leading something else easier. You can probably sport climb 5.12, trad can be different. But, that is what trad climbing is about, learning about climbing and yourself. Keep climbing! -old retired trad climber

Apr 19, 2011 - Hey, sorry for the delay with my reply. The accident I'm talking about took place in 2004 in the Gunks, the guy who was injured was a friend of mine from Boston. Wearing a helmet doesn't significantly contribute to your safety, the injuries it might help to save you from are not life threatening, and if things go wrong, no helmet is gonna save you, sorry. It gives you a false sense of safety and thus boosts your confidence -- sometimes it's good, sometimes it isn't.

wcleary91 Says:

Apr 19, 2011 - I cant seem to find any accident report from 2004 in the Gunks that says a falling climber pulled EIGHT bolts out. I think I would be very curious to hear about the wall/route that this happened on.

bigturtlehand Says:

Apr 23, 2011 - 8 bolts isn't BS if the climber weighed perhaps as much as an elephant.

AitzBilbo Says:

Apr 30, 2011 - was going to comment but u have said it all

andrewprime1 Says:

May 15, 2011 - I am sorry, maybe it didn't matter in this video, but a helmet is ALWAYS a good idea! If you smack the back of your head against the rock hard enough you're dead, simple as that. Bad rope awareness, belayer not paying enough attention, glad you are ok man, I bet you won't make that mistake again.

gawker8750 Says:

May 17, 2011 - I think that you flipped upside down because you were "taking" on that cam. It blew as you were weighting it and leaning back in your harness. A standard fall like a slipped hand or foot probably wouldn't have flipped you since the rope wouldn't have hooked your ankle either. And oh yeah, wear a helmet.

gawker8750 Says:

May 17, 2011 - Eight bolts failed? No. Freakin, Way! That never happened.

Spericksen Says:

Jul 20, 2011 - I'm sorry, I know you've been getting a lot of comments about this, but wear a helmet, dude.

MurderWalrus Says:

Aug 30, 2011 - @pg78ify You know nothing gumby. How dare you tell people not to wear helmets. Don't spread your nonsense here. Some people here have had some serious experiences or know people who have. Let's not prize ignorance so highly. Wear a helmet or don't expect people to listen to you bitch about your wheelchair. That's all.

varminthunter805 Says:

Oct 4, 2011 - I was wondering a fast way to retrieve all your gear

kovacsan11 Says:

Apr 1, 2012 - Could have been worse! My buddy broke his leg on Pope's Crack 3 years ago actually belaying. His partner zippered all of his pieces and fell on top of him. The climber didn't have a scratch but my friend wound up being a crash pad!

wburgboy75 Says:

May 21, 2012 - Lol @ ripping 8 bolts. Btw, I have seen a helmet prevent serious injury. If the bolts were in terrible enough shape to pull 8 from a fall, the poor condition should have been obvious and they shouldn't have been trusted as pro. I would LOVE to know what route this bolt-ripping adventure occurred on. We can go visit it together riding unicorns!
