Whether they're intelligent design advocates, psychics, or 9/11 truthers, Skeptic Magazine's Founding Publisher Michael Shermer says the world is full of people who believe weird things.Shermer sat down with Reason.tv's Tim Cavanaugh at Libertopia 2010 in Hollywood to discuss why self-help gurus aren't the key to happiness, what the New Atheist movement hopes to accomplish, why liberals accept evolution but not free markets, and why he switched from global warming skepticism to acceptance. Approximately 9 minutes. Camera by Adam Hawk Jensen and Zach Weissmueller. Edited by Weissmueller. Music by Bjorn Fogelberg (Magnatune Records). Visit Reason.tv for downloadable versions. Apr 29, 2012 - communism is not a religion wow..
45zarathustra Says:
May 2, 2012 - Shermer is too kind to religion...It is a poison that warps the minds of all peoples...It should be stamped out like the wildfire if ignorance it is...Teaching the big 3...Judaism,Islam & X-tianity...To children should be treated like what it is...Child Abuse...Ignorance is a learned trait just like knowledge...Atheists SHOULD gather and declare a war on all these fundamentalist religions...I for one am in their face about it...So should you. . . . .Z
Thisnamewasnotaken Says:
May 19, 2012 - Here's why atheism/agnosticism will always exist and why religions will always exist, and it's very simple really. WE'RE NOT THE SAME! People of the highest intelligence and logical capacity will fall into the atheist/agnostic category. On the other hand, religious institutions will persist and prey upon the meek and less intelligent members of society -- this, of course, will always result in separation, control, and conflicts as it always has.
raphael bindi Says:
May 20, 2012 - Where did you get those stats from?
Thisnamewasnotaken Says:
May 21, 2012 - I did not list any stats. If you're referring to my reference of higher intelligence vs. lower intelligence population, then are you saying this is an inaccurate observation?
raphael bindi Says:
May 21, 2012 - That's exactly what I wa trying to say. How did you arrive at that fact?
raphael bindi Says:
May 21, 2012 - This is, in my oppinion, an articulate an intlligent retort without the usual use of profane and offensive language. Keep up the good work!
canyouseetheproblem Says:
May 21, 2012 - I'll say this one more time!!! atheism is not a religion, we have no formal dogma, being an atheist doesn't mean you have to believe in evolution, or natural selection, just like being a deist doesn't mean you have to believe in krishna as well as jesus. Atheists don't eat babies, we don't sacrafice animals to the devil, mostly cause there isn't one, atheists pay taxes we get colds, some of us work a crappy 9-5 job. were people just like every one else
canyouseetheproblem Says:
May 21, 2012 - attention christians: why do you get to put your hateful signs all over our schools and hospitals and towns and parks, but as soon as an atheist group wants to put a sign up to let other atheists know they are not alone, you whine and cry and call it an attack against you? why does it seem like you are all for freedom of speech when your talking but when an atheist wants to talk you say he's being to harsh even though you just called him evil and wicked. christians, quit acting like 2 year olds
canyouseetheproblem Says:
May 21, 2012 - you just showed your hand with that comment, obviously you haven't done the research to debate anyone, cause evolution has been observed, why do you think you need a new flu shot every year, the flu virus evolves like microorganisms. as a matter of fact, the greeks used to be 5' at the most, now there are people of all sizes. there was also a study done where the 1 limbed fish after so many generations of breeding lose there limb. different dog breeds. evolution has been observed
Thisnamewasnotaken Says:
May 21, 2012 - It's just my observation. Most religious people I know (including most of my own family) are of lesser intelligence. Couple my personal experiences with all of the collective information I've gathered about the topic, and it leads me to draw such conclusions. Also, they're not only less intelligent, but they're also lazier and more submissive. This, of course, is an unfortunate symptom of the brain that is infected with religious dogma. Do you share different views? Do tell.
mrcamryse Says:
May 21, 2012 - I have not had a flu shot sense i was a child.:) I understand viruses evolve, but everything has a limit.Do you think the flu virus will one day evovle into a human, walk, talk or develope a conscience. Not likely! There has always been people of all sizes. You or anybody, have never known or seen anything else. Dog breeding, fish breeding etc.... That's called micro variation, not evolution! You will never see a fish turn into a dog. Macro evolution has never been observed! ;)
canyouseetheproblem Says:
May 22, 2012 - again, you make it so obvious how little you've looked into the subject. you're not arguing against my point because you have any proof of your belief, you just trying to play off all the evidence that is stacked against you, you don't have one shred of evidence of creationism, and it scares you that we have so much for evolution. there is no point in arguing with you because you don't care about facts. all you can do is try to pick apart our theory, but we keep finding more and more evidence.
an04RoadKing Says:
May 22, 2012 - Atheism is neither religion nor the absence of religion. More aptly, atheism is the absence of theism, which is the belief in deities. Religion is more than just the belief in God.There are those who believe in a god or "divine figure"; they are theists. There are those who go beyond the belief of a deity to include the belief in a doctrine of rules, punishments, and worship as a spiritual lifestyle; they are practicing religion. Atheism and religion are two unique and unrelated ideas.
invisblchzbrgr Says:
May 22, 2012 - OK I can get behind that. I'm just tired of having to correct people who try to justify their own irrationality by claiming everyone else is as irrational as they are.
mrcamryse Says:
May 22, 2012 - How can i argue against a proofless theory with imaginary evidence?! The universe/order, IS proof of creation! (Pick apart your theory) Not much left to pick apart! When i see facts, i'll agree with them. Until then, have a nice day. ;)
raphael bindi Says:
May 23, 2012 - I do agree with you that many religious beliefs seem to be or are absurd, and when one is asked to clarify their beliefs, their their answers might want you to shake your head and say,"How can some people be so stupid!" I myself , m ambaressed at some of the espnses. However , I also know that there are lot of "intelligent" people who do hold and profess religious beliefs. Don't ask me how many there are nor the ratio of the number of intelligent believers to non believers. I simply don"t know
raphael bindi Says:
May 23, 2012 - This is the reason I asked where you got your info. from. Furthermore, I wish to point the danger when one takes incomplete data and fragmented information and comes up with a conclusive argument. For example, if one were to study poverty in the U.S. and find that a disproportion number was black, he might conclude, as white supremistsdo, that whites were superior to blacks.
raphael bindi Says:
May 23, 2012 - This is what Sam Harris seems to do with Religion: he takes a ouple of evil and shameless act in history i.e The crusades, and the inquisition, and puts the blame, rightfully so, squarely on religion. However, he does'nt there . He takes ALL the evils of the word and blames it n religion. The man is obsessed!
Thisnamewasnotaken Says:
May 23, 2012 - I understand, my grandmother is an intelligent woman -- she's just been the victim of brainwashing since childhood. But, I'm referring more to the masses. There seems to be more intelligent and educated people who are non-believers than there are intelligent and educated believers. Does that make sense? :)
Chicken471Bologna Says:
May 23, 2012 - NOOO!!! As an atheist I'd rather be at a puny 10% rather that at 20% with all the Deepaks.
richo61 Says:
May 29, 2012 - "atheism is not a religion. it's the absence of one."Atheism is the absence of gods, not having a God. (a - theos : without - god , godless)I can imagine a religion that didn't have a God or gods.A religion is a set of beliefs and practices designed to put people in touch with ultimate reality - to connect you with * ultimate* reality. If there really is no God then that's one aspect of reality that a true religion would put you in touch with. 8-)

Apr 29, 2012 - I like to close my eyes when I play this and imagine that Kermit is talking.
