May 9, 2012 - The Civil War was not about slavery. The war was about a shift in the economy from agrarian to industrial based, and the north needed bodies to work in the factories in the burgeoning urban centers. Many southerners didn't give a toss about slavery one way or the other by that time, and many had freed their slaves by the time the war started. They objected to how the federal government conducted itself unconstitutionally. Freeing slaves was a noble cause. The way it was done was not.

May 22, 2012 - There's a quote I heard in a (long) Ken Burns Civil War documentary. A group of Union soldiers ran into a lone confederate who was obviously poor, didn't own slaves and was still fighting. they wound up asking "so what you fighting for boy?" and the guy just said "I'm fighting because you're down here". That sums it up well...the aristocracy of the Confederacy were fighting to hold onto things, slaves included, the average soldier though barely had money for clothes, let alone slaves.

May 28, 2012 - That is a very eloquent take on it, not saying that I totally believe it but it rings true from a revisionist 21st century point of view, and I have saved this to show to my brother, who is a lifelong student of the Civil War and an unapologetic confederate sympathiser, despite not even being American! No doubt he will agree with you completely, and make me dress up as Lincoln before yet again soundly defeating me in a table-top recreation of Gettysburg!Thanks, I guess.
