WinehouseLover19 Says:
Jul 23, 2011 - In what ways does this song equate to Romanticism?
MusicalEutopia Says:
Jul 23, 2011 - In the extensive use of discord and the heavy embrace of emotion and human feeling. This music is modernist, the period that superseded romanticism: antecedent periods always live on in their successors in some form. For example, even though the Renaissance period rejected medieval values in favour of those of the Grecians and Romans, the motet lived on but became more simple rhythmically and more decipherable lyrically.
WinehouseLover19 Says:
Jul 24, 2011 - The period of Romanticism was mostly associated with the ideas of the French Revolution and the political discourse of libertarianism. The major issues of the day were liberty, personal and social. There were other concerns connected with the Romantic period such as Women's Rights (Note: Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Women), Psychoanalysis and the Child (Wordsworth) and Hellenic Culture (Most notably Byron and Keats). I see none of these (the core) elements
WinehouseLover19 Says:
Jul 24, 2011 - continued... I see none of these (the core) elements of Romantic thought in this version of the song. You seem to be an intelligent person, and quite articulate but my God, with all due respect, you seem to know fuck all about Romanticism..
MusicalEutopia Says:
Jul 24, 2011 - This is amusing. You are talking about the whole movement; I am talking about Romanticism as it pertains to music, which I am very well versed in. Romantic music did not hold as much ideological weight as other intellectual and artistic fields. I am clearly, obviously, unmistakably speaking of Romantic musical elements, which you have yet to address, and not Romantic ideologies. Read and understand before trying to rebut. Otherwise, you waste my time. Thanks.
WinehouseLover19 Says:
Jul 24, 2011 - You still haven't explained then which elements of the song make it Romantic. You have claimed that it is typical of Romaticism and then said later that it is a Modernist song, claiming antecedents live on in some form through their successors, a lot of very eloquent wording but it still seems to signify very little to me.
MusicalEutopia Says:
Jul 24, 2011 - Firstly, reread the first sentence of my first response. Furthermore, of course it is a modernist song; it would have to be so for my example in the last sentence of my first post to work. Lastly, what it "seems" to signify to you concerns me in the least. This is my last response: this discourse is fruitless.

Aug 24, 2011 - The era of Romanticism too was associated with the ideas of human drama, tragic loves, desires and utopian ideals.

Nov 18, 2011 - why did Beyonce have to ruin this song?
TransmissionFilms Says:
Jan 6, 2012 - People you can't forget that Beyonce wrote and produced this song. So without her we wouldn't have this awesome cover.
KillerBill1953 Says:
Jan 25, 2012 - Sometimes people take a song and cover it in such a brilliant way it becomes their song. Hendrix did this with "All along the Watchtower". UNfortunately some covers are execrable, in my opinion the Killers doing "Shadowplay" is one of those. The Big Pink fall into the first category, so what if you don't like Beyonce's version, personally I love this one.
