Description:
On January 25th a couple brought in an eagle that was hit by the grill of a semi truck on the highway near the Saratoga Beach area. Fortunately, the woman spotted Sara tumbling into the ditch after the impact, while following the semi in her car and called her husband to assist in the rescue. This is a very large eagle, approximately 6 kg and about 4 years old. She has no broken bones, but may have some internal injuries or bruising, since she prefers to lie down, rather than stand. We are hoping that rest and treatment for the pain and swelling will allow her to recover. If you feel comfortable catching and transporting eagles or other raptors on your own to bring to us, please do so in a safe manner. Once caught, they should be confined in a pet crate or large box - consult MARS for instructions.1-800-304-9968 or 250-337-2021Apologies to Jackie - her last name is Chamberlain, not Chambers!Wildlife is always unpredictable and more so when they've been injured or become ill. We don't always know where or why they hurt. Sara (Saratoga) died during the night of February 11th- it may be that she had some internal injuries from the accident that we couldn't detect. She has had intestinal problems all along and there may have been something associated with that that caused her death. Thank you to her rescuers, at least she had a chance and was warm and dry to the end.
