Title: Martial Arts Odyssey: Bokator Ro Serey

Added: Feb 25, 2010

Author: brooklynmonk1

Duration: 9:59

Description:
Siem Reap Province, home of Angkor Wat, Antonio Graceffo travels out into the rice fields to meet with Ro Serey, a Bokator master who learned his skills from spirit teachers. This episode has the least martial arts of any episode of the show. Most of Ro Sereys students had left Siem Reap, seeking working in other provinces of Cambodia as well as in Thailand. Poverty is one of the most powerful forces which may bring about an end to martial art in Cambodia. Even when his students are home, Ro Serey tells Antonio that they cant train hard because of lack of food and because they are needed to work on the family rice fields and to catch fish so the family can eat.Brooklyn Monk in Asia Podcast (anti-travel humor)http://brooklynmonk.podomatic.comTwitterhttp://twitter.com/Brooklynmonkwebsitewww.speakingadventure.comfacebookBrooklyn Monk fan pageSubscribe to youtubeYoutube/brooklynmonk1

Feb 25, 2010 - My wife is Filipina, and they eat those partially developed eggs too. But, they call them "balute". And I really like this episode. Not much action, but thats fine with me. I like your show because it really gets to know the people behind the art, and how they "FEEL" about it. When you really think about it, without certain individuals who carry the art, it wouldnt survive. Its people like Ro Serey who defy hardship and have love for the martial arts. Its a beautiful thing

Bebopchiflow Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - I loved this video its important to see the culture of where these martial arts come from because the culture is a big part of why these martial arts were developed thanks again Antonio i love any culture because there is so much to learn god bless khmer's, the shan people and you

GregK28002 Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - have you ever metioned Muay Chaiya to them? I know that sounds stupid...... but just wondering

hotpopcorncake Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - Huh? That don't even make sense, he learn from Ancient spirits? was he a monk or something? Is this suppose to be a spiritual side of bokator?

brooklynmonk1 Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - a lot of teachers in this part of the world, thailand and cambodia, learn from spirit teachers. this is very common.

brooklynmonk1 Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - no, i study chaiya but these guys hate thailand so much that i dont even mention it. in one part of this, you hear my camera man shouting "Khmer! Khmer" because i was talking khmer but i accidentally used some thai words.

hotpopcorncake Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - This is really weird. ain't there teacher have learn bakator that's past on.

TrueRidahTP Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - Both Thailand and Cambodia have deep roots in mysticism and religion. Some stuff are real, while others are pure bullshit. I will admit though that there are spirits and ghosts that haunt Cambodia. There are lots of cases of spirit possession. And in other cases voodoo and demonic possessions happen as well. As for Ro Serey, I'm sorry but this guy looks like a fraud. Bokator is for real, but the way this guy talks in Khmer, and the way he acts brings suspicion to me.

TrueRidahTP Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - The Bokator master from Kompot seems like a legit master. As for this guy Ros Serey, I'm sorry but he's a fake.

TrueRidahTP Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - There are a lot of guys out there in the Khmer community who go out and rip off their own people. They're basically like con men. You can't just believe anything some Khmer guys say. I've seen plenty of them in the Khmer community. I wouldn't believe this guy if I were you guys. As for the other guys from Kompot they're definitely more legit.

brooklynmonk1 Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - No worries, i accept what you say. there are only about 12 or at most, 20 guys in cambodia, claiming to be bokator masters. there are about three who i dont much believe, but i still want to record their story and show to the world, because cambodia has so little, so even the small ones or fake ones, at least it's something.

southfistkid Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - hey antonio i was wondering what is chaiya?

brooklynmonk1 Says:

Feb 25, 2010 - Chaiya is an old style of muay thai that i study in thailand. i absolutely love it. you can see several martial arts odyssey episodes about it.

CeeRaali Says:

Feb 26, 2010 - sugar cane juice... omg my favorite when i was in cambodia. loved the fact that you get them in plastic bags.

GregK28002 Says:

Feb 26, 2010 - yeah i think some Khmers just look at the past... i dont think they ever get mad becuz of today..... some of them like thai and some of them hate Thai.. and some call Thai people thieves..but i love both Cambodia and Thailand so w/e

sunrise3500 Says:

Mar 1, 2010 - Antonio, would you do more filmings of the old masters so we can get more depth, philosophy and culture behind the art of Bokator? I really enjoy hearing their life story and opinions. How of these 70+ year old masters are still alive in Cambodia? Do you know? Thank you. I know it is a bit to ask since these guys are so old, but when you film them can you ask for form and the ritual demonstration?

arm61037 Says:

Sep 19, 2011 - Because cambodian hate thailand they Spread Rumors about thai stole their martial art if anyone want to belive them that fine but if anyone want to know the Truth u can search in youtube between our art before develop to sport martial art search " Oldest Thai Boxing footage ever from 1920's " and " Bokator/Pradal Serey, Angkor Wat Cambodia 1930s "it total deference fighting style.
