May 9, 2012 - Can anybody tell me if Peggy Gordon is a Scottish song and That Luke's mother was Scottish as well

Haystackable Says:

May 11, 2012 - It's Scottish in a sense. It's a Canadian folk song, most likely written by a Scottish immigrant. Apparently no one outside of Nova Scotia knew about the song until the 1950s.

Lanarkshireman Says:

May 25, 2012 - This is not true. The Canadians claim it because they have no heritage of their own, but it was known in Scotland long before this. Luke Kelly even said he learnt it from his Scottish grandmother, who died in 1953.After he recorded it it was passed into the Irish tradition, so some came to regard it as Irish.. There was a known performance of it in New York in 1820, and the words and music were published, again in New York in 1880. Whatever country has a claim to it, it is definitely not Canada.
