It was in response to a need for self defence. It's the national fighting style of Russia. Check out a Russian Sambo Army vid. The Wing Shun movie IP Man might be in order if you like history; very good story, and the fighting scenes arn't cheapened by goofy camera drama where they don't show all the action.
