Description:
The Nerves - Hanging On The TelephoneOriginal Release 1976From The Nerves EPThe Nerves were a mid-'70s power pop trio based in Los Angeles, California, featuring guitarist Jack Lee, bassist Peter Case, and drummer Paul Collins. All three members composed songs and sang. They managed a national tour, including a few dates with The Ramones, but they lasted just a short time and self-released only one self-titled four-song EP in 1976, featuring the songs "Hanging on the Telephone" (Lee), "When You Find Out" (Case), "Give Me Some Time" (Lee), and "Working Too Hard" (Collins). The EP was distributed by independent Bomp! Records. I'm in the phone booth, it's the one across the hallIf you don't answer, I'll just ring it off the wallI know he's there, but I just had to callDon't leave me hanging on the telephone (2x)I heard your mother now she's going out the doorDid she go to work or just go to the storeAll those things she said, I told you to ignoreOh why can't we talk again (3x)Don't leave me hanging on the telephone (2x)It's good to hear your voice, you know it's been so longIf I don't get your call then everything goes wrongI want to tell you something you've known all alongDon't leave me hanging on the telephoneI had to interrupt and stop this conversationYour voice across the line gives me a strange sensationI'd like to talk when I can show you my affectionOh I can't control myself (3x)Don't leave me hanging on the telephoneHang up and run to meWhoah, hang up and run to me (3x)Whoah oh oh oh run to me

Mar 14, 2012 - why is Blondie in the title from 1976? She did it in 1978.

Mar 14, 2012 - It's a tag in the listing. 1976 is The Nerves 45 release. Get it?

Mar 14, 2012 - Not disputing your right to prefer Blondie's version, but part of what's so great about this is that it's NOT "more professionally done/smoother." There were boatloads of smooth and professional recordings being done at this time. It was like a living death: everywhere you went you heard Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. This song and others like it come from people understand what this kind of music is about, and it isn't being smooth and professional.

Mar 14, 2012 - Why is Blondie mentioned though? I guess I'm dumb b/c I don't get it.

Mar 14, 2012 - Listen to minutegongcoughs, he knows of which he speaks. People search daily for a Blondie song, but when they stumble on a hidden classic like this tune, they may even say "THANKS, minutegongcoughs! I never even knew there was an original version!!!" I know I did. Thumb up'ed and subscribed, too! Cheers, man & have a good one!

Mar 22, 2012 - I fell onto this one after someone posted on Blondies that their version was an homage to the nerves. Well I have gotta say this is one piece of vinyl I really wished I had. Great find, thanks minutegongcoughs

Mar 25, 2012 - Hi, Mr. Pinks 33, thanks for joining in, and thanks to tullguy too. It's awesome when a great song sparks cool conversations! I first heard about The Nerves In a book that I won on CBC Radio3 about the band's days as a Yonge St. heavyweight before their return to California, and the Plimsouls era, Liz Worth's Treat Me Like Dirt, about the first wave of Punk in Toronto,1977 -1981.

Feb 27, 2012 - Good but I prefer Blondie's version... it's more well done/well produced, if that makes any sense.. It sounds more professionally done/smoother and it sounds better with a female (Debbie Harry)'s voice. still a good song, of course.
