Title: TEDxManhattanBeach - Thomas Suarez - iPhone Application Developer... and 6th Grader

Added: Nov 7, 2011

Author: TEDxTalks

Duration: 4:34

Description:
Thomas Suarez is a 6th grade student at a middle school in the South Bay of Los Angeles. When Apple released the Software Development Kit (SDK), he began to create and sell his own applications. "My parents, my friends and even the people at the Apple store all supported me," he says, "and Steve Jobs inspired me". Thomas points out that it's hard to learn how to make an app. "For soccer you could go to a soccer team ... but what if you want to make an app?" He's started a club for fellow students at school, where he shares his knowledge of programming. Thomas articulates his vision that students are a valuable new technology resource to teachers, and should be empowered to offer assistance in developing the technology curriculum and also assist in delivering the lessons.Thomas has been fascinated by computers and technology since before kindergarten. Recently, he's been focused on the development of applications for the iPhone, and has established his own company, CarrotCorp http://www.carrotcorp.com/. His most successful application is one he terms "an anti-Justin-Bieber game" called "Bustin Jieber". "It's is a variation on the Whac-a-Mole theme," he explains. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bustin-jieber/id404956571?mt=8More information about TEDxManhattanBeach can be found at http://tedxmanhattanbeach.com/. Follow us on Twitter @TEDxMBIn the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxManhattanBeach, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxManhattanBeach event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

pixysamuel Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - I was fooling around and slacking when I was in my sixth grade, kind of embarrassing when I see this kid doing big things already. And, I've just started my programming 101, while he has already made a few apps already. I guess I really need to work harder now...Anyway, I wish you success kid!

vidthai0202 Says:

unpluggednetworks Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - OMG, I nearly threw up watching this. I just can't fxxxing believe all the positive comments on this vid. Are you people completely blind? This kid clearly didn't have a childhood and behaves nothing like a 6th grader would and should normally behave. This is child abuse 2.0 and I extend both my middle fingers to the narcissistic parents of this poor kid.

Mystylplx Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - You are clearly a moron. What makes you think he isn't having a childhood? Just because he's way smarter than you don't assume that playing at making apps isn't as much fun as playing with Ken and Barbie. Most kids spend endless hours playing with really stupid useless toys that teach them nothing. This kid has learned at an early age that learning and creating cool shit is way more fun than that.

Uploadthedownload Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - Buggggggaaaar . . . . I was making stupid slideshow games in PowerPoint at his age and he's doing Objective-C and Apple Coding?Blimey! That's amazing.

wesselklooster Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - - and what all of our presenting-skills were, back then.

Kociembab Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - Creating a simple database that tracks volunteer logins and logouts was one of the most memorable things I did in middle school, they also "paid" me to use what I had made. Just because YOU feel that this kid is being forced to do things he hates, at the sake of parental approval, doesn't give you any reason to argue about it here on Youtube against some person you probably don't know. For the record, I survived middle school and went on to study CS in a University.

MoldytoasterMedia Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - he's such a noob

inxiveneoy Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - I just got introduced to computers shy of 6th grade :(

meinhoonnasrk Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - Bravo kiddo! These days a lot of kids get into drugs and whatever is called "cool" out there but this one is a Steve Jobs in the making.

Vavelix Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - Bravo!!! I have not actually seen his apps, so I cannot offer any objective opinion about them but his presentation skills are perfect.

MWee22 Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - learning code from a book to create an textbased game.

InfinitiveStars Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - At 6th grade i was also programming, but then (90's) we haven't social media ..

DavidR1991 Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - Important to remember that this kid has been enabled by the internet and a pretty decent delivery platform (the app store). If the generation from the 70s/80s/90s had access to this kind of stuff I think the world would be a pretty different place (I'm not bitter or taking away from his achievement - just noting that his success is also a product of his time, not just him)

mcleaver Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - An international audience may have no idea what "6th grade" is? How old is Thomas?

piyushmishraYT Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - Get this kid to Open Source projects. he belongs!!!

ChrisG4620 Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - I agree, but then agian if he enjoys what he's doing and he's having fun, then thats what counts.

ChrisG4620 Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - How can you say he's not had a childhood. The point of childhood is to have fun, and enjoy yourself. Which is what he's doing, along with gaining very useful skills for the future. He still goes to school, he still apart of school clubs (as he's said in the video), and I'm sure he still goes out and plays with his friends. Just grow up, and quit being so jealous.

jubic Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - BRING BUSTIN JIEBER TO ANDROID PLEASE.
