Title: Tallinn, Estonia: Old World Meets New
Added: Mar 16, 2011
Author: RickSteves
Duration: 2:56
Description:
Tallinn is a mix of east and west. Its Nordic Lutheran culture and language connect it with Scandinavia's Stockholm and Helsinki. But two centuries of Tsarist Russian rule and nearly 50 years as part of the Soviet Union have blended in a distinctly Russian flavor. Tallinn has modernized at an astounding rate since the fall of the Soviet Union, while also remaining one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the north of Europe. Mar 17, 2011 - Rick, great video as usual. One question, do Karel and Simon ever hold seminars on videography for people going on vacation. With the advent of tiny, hand-held video cameras, many with 1080p capabilities, I think it would be cool to get a primer from your guys on the best techniques to capture quality footage while traveling.

Mar 20, 2011 - Talinn was one of my favorite stops on a tour through Scandinavia, St Petersburg and then south, a few years ago. I wandered the olde town streets at night and felt that I had traveled back in time.

Apr 1, 2011 - actually I'm surprised to see matryoshka doll costumes walking the streets of Tallinn. It's just too random, the only reason for there being a market for these dolls in Estonia is that foreigners are to ignorant to see the difference between Estonian and Russian culture and buy them because they are near Russia and think these are part of Estonian culture aswell. It's like selling Swiss knives in Munich - they are from a close place, but have nothing to do with the local culture.

Jan 19, 2012 - I really like Rick Steves, and normally he's very good. But I was disappointed that he never learned how to pronounce Tallinn properly. I was also disappointed that he never showed us the REAL Estonia, which is found outside of Old Town Tallinn. Why didn't he go to Tartu, Parnu, Haapsalu, Saaremaa? If you only visit Old Town, you haven't seen Estonia! He should have devoted the 30 minutes to Estonia and split it with Finland.
