Title: On The Beach (1959) - Walzing Matilda (read the info)

Added: Jul 13, 2010

Author: Ccvanl

Duration: 5:59

Description:
The Cold War aspects of this movie may be a bit dated, but for those of us of a certain age it is a reminder of the fears we lived under at that time. In retrospect, it may be that Julian was wrong: it may have indeed been the very presence of these terrible weapons that prevented a third world war.In any case, that aspect of the story never overshadows the movie's underlying theme, which is, rather, how each of us views the sum of our lives as our mortal end approaches. Are we alone? Have we connected with anyone? Have we failed? Have we loved? Have we been loved? One of the most depressing movies ever made, but a truly great one.

Aug 29, 2011 - A movie on Australia,a place that always fears the bad things that come to its shores from the outer wolrd.

Sep 27, 2011 - RATS! I'm old enough to remember the fear we had back then, and this movie brings it back! And then we got the Nuclear Winter, remember? Great movie, my only complain is that they filmed it in Melbourne and not in Sydney, where I lived. Oh well, the book says Melbourne anyway. Regards

Sep 27, 2011 - When I was 13, I had a really bad case of the flu. To help keep my mind off of how bad I felt, I read Nevil Shute's "On the Beach". When I got to the part where they were throwing up from radiation sickness, I started worrying that I had radiation poisoning instead of the flu. My parents, of course, told me that I was nuts.Fortunately, they were right :)

Sep 28, 2011 - Much of this film was recorded at Wilson's Hill - now named Wilson Botanic Park - in Berwick, Victoria, Australia. I live approximately a hundred metres away - in fact, I ate lunch there this afternoon. For those of you interested in seeing the park look it up on Google Earth.

Oct 3, 2011 - Correct in every word you wrote. We WILL never see it again. Tears for the song and the cast in that you actually believed Ava and Fred and Gregory and Anthony. Remember this since I was little and to this day - it is still haunting me.

Oct 25, 2011 - One of the few sci fi stories at the time where the human race did not win. Then we worried about nuclear weapons. Now we worry about a lot more with them. Still, in the end, how do we live our lives? What is important? What defines who we are? A hard movie to watch. But a great one none the less. Thank you for posting.

Oct 27, 2011 - Loved the book, loved this movie, loved the 90s Aussie series... but can people who didn't grow up in the 50s and 60s appreciate the fear we lived under constantly...

anisete46 Says:

Oct 27, 2011 - My only beef with the 90s series was that they didn't include the fabulous music of Waltzing Matilda.... I know there is controversy about the different ending from the book in the series and the movie, but both are beautiful....

Nov 12, 2011 - I sadly dont think so -mores the pity for them .Hope they never live under such real a fear .

profitleads Says:

Nov 16, 2011 - I would call it the most disturbing movie ever made.

Nov 24, 2011 - Comments that trail are excellent. This film a tremendous reminder of priorities, but also one that if for real, would represent incredible courage.

coventrygardens Says:

Nov 26, 2011 - i think the radiation eventually subsided, and a small number of australians survived, and these survivors tried to re-build society, but it was tough-doing, and that's when mad max ( mel gibson ) came on the scene.

coventrygardens Says:

Nov 27, 2011 - and the voters should read/see those as well.

Dec 16, 2011 - The science was ridiculous, but it is probably Shute's best book from a literary standpoint.

RPenta Says:

Jan 14, 2012 - Yes and No-the Bush-Obama pro war administrations have jinned up fear against "Islamofascists" to justify war, huge expenditures for war and suppression of civil liberties-which survived the awesome and chilling threats of the cold war.

Feb 5, 2012 - when i first watched this one, it was for historical curiosity, now i think its a bit of a surreal masterpiece.

MegaKillWhitey Says:

Apr 14, 2012 - no, but I put it tied in First Place with Seven Days in May though. between those two, most of the COld War hyper fear is perfectly expressed.

May 9, 2012 - How interesting because that is sort of unnoficial national anthem for Australia. At least until 'land down under' took over.I only just discovered it was used in this film. You would be getting teary on many occasions in Australia. Which would be appropriate but for different emotions.

therongperson Says:

May 14, 2012 - Thank you for posting this. The first time I seen this movie I was in high school. But it was not until recently that I realized the last scene in the film showing the banner that says "There is still time...brother" Is actually a message to humanity. We've heeded that warning-for now. Trust me, its not dated.
