He had a problem with the electric forced the crew to transfer all the occupants on the lifeboats in the direction of the neighboring island of GiglioThe Costa ConcordiaGiglio Island (Tuscany) OME — Six people died in the early hours of Saturday after a cruise ship ran aground off the Italian coast in an accident which forced the coast guard to evacuate over 4,000 people, media reports said. The Costa Concordia was on a trip around the Mediterranean when it hit a reef near the Isola del Giglio late Friday. The local mayor said he feared further casualties as it was proving difficult to rescue the last passengers. One of the victims was a man in his 70s who died of a heart attack caused by the shock to his system when he jumped into the icy waters, reports said.Several people were also injured in the accident, two of them seriously. Most of the 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members had been evacuated, but around 200 people were still on board around 0230 GMT, according to the prefect of the nearby city of Grosseto, Giuseppe Linardi.Helicopters with spotlights were being used to help rescuers."At around 8:00 pm (1900 GMT) the 290-metre-long Costa Concordia cruise ship... began taking on water and tilting over by around 20 degrees," the coast guard said in a statement, as most of those aboard were rescued in lifeboats.Passengers heard a large bang and were initially told the ship had shuddered to a halt for electrical reasons, before being told to put on their life-jackets, a passenger from the boat told ANSA news agency by telephone."We were having supper when the lights suddenly went out, we heard a boom and a groaning noise, and all the cutlery fell on the floor," passenger Luciano Castro told ANSA news agency. Some passengers jumped into the sea in their hurry to get off the sinking ship, according to the reports."It was like a scene from the Titanic," said passenger Mara Parmegiani. The local mayor said they were trying to find room to accommodate the rescued passengers, including pregnant women and children."We are trying to accommodate them anywhere we can, in schools, nurseries, hotels, anywhere that has a roof," said mayor Sergio Ortelli, who added that some passengers were even bedding down for the night in the church. The Costa Crociera company, which owns the vessel, said that it was not yet possible to say what caused the problem, but that the evacuation had been fast."The ship was on a cruise in the Mediterranean, leaving from Savona with planned stops in Civitavecchia, Palermo, Cagliari, Palma, Barcelona and Marseille," the company said."There were around 1,000 Italian passengers on board, as well as 500 Germans and around 160 French people," it added, without giving details about the rest. The cruise ship -- which boasts 58 suites with balconies, five restaurants, 13 bars, five Jacuzzis and four swimming pools -- had set off from the Civitavecchia port near Rome earlier Friday when it ran into difficulties.Boats from the nearby port helped evacuate the passengers and crew.

Jan 17, 2012 - I agree. Any disaster seems to bring out the worst idiots.

fkarno Says:

Jan 17, 2012 - I don't think you need to worry. This man is not going to be given command of anything.

fkarno Says:

Jan 17, 2012 - You are a little behind the news, dear. People got killed, and others are still missing so you can stop rejoicing. And now that you have dragged God into it, what lesson do you think He has he taught us? We already knew that it is not a good idea to sail a large ship near rocks.

LightningStench Says:

Jan 17, 2012 - the hell are you? PedoGranny!

MrJuno6 Says:

Jan 17, 2012 - The captain must be charged, for lying to the passengers, if not for negligence.

HeySere Says:

Jan 17, 2012 - I'm italian and i'm very ashamed of the behavior of captain schettino, but there are stupid people all over the world; for every schettino, there are many helpful and brave italians who are ready to give their lives in order to save human beings. You can't generalize! Every country has his rotten apples, and if you were here now, you would realize how many "good apples" Italy has. So stop being racists and think about the fact that we all live in the same world.

fkarno Says:

Jan 17, 2012 - Your village has called - they want their idiot back!

Jan 19, 2012 - Interesting you should mention apples - in europe we have a saying about Italians (but also Gypsies and Greek): They are like apples - the darker, the more rotten inside.

Jan 20, 2012 - They released Schettino to "house arrest" on Tuesday in Italy after he was questioned by the judge for 3 hours. I have to say, that guy should probably get some jail time for his actions, there are 11 people confirmed dead that I know of.

HeySere Says:

Jan 23, 2012 - I will waste just a few words: I'm glad that you're not italian. Italy doesn't need people like you. You talk about Europe. sorry, WHICH EUROPE? Anyway,NOW SHUT UP AND HAVE SOME FUCKING RESPECT FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DIED, DOESN'T MATTER IF THEY WERE ITALIANS OR GERMANS OR GYPSIES OR INUIT.

sunbeammeme Says:

Jan 23, 2012 - If you live in the us, you most likely know about the death the the bill SOPA and PIPA. These two victories are overwhelming for the internet as a whole, but new bills are coming... more powerful and fascist. ACTA is a bill which will allow the government to force ISP providers to monitor all packets of data going in and out of your network including email, video uploads and downloads, torrents of all types, pictures and the list keeps going. Copy this and spread the word to *X* amount of videos.

TheApplePoint Says:

Jan 29, 2012 - Remember that the fault isn't all of Schettino. Where were the other official men?

ypenburger Says:

drumskatesnow Says:

Feb 5, 2012 - Yet we do it anyway. and not dragging God into anything about how man tends to spend their time and money on boats that have swimming pools on swimming pools on the vastly parts of an incredible ocean it just seems disturbing to me about what were doing in modern day age with our fancy boat ideas. theres my 2 cents worth

ATLANTICCITY24 Says:

Mar 15, 2012 - FROM TITANICS ICEBURG TO THE TUSCANY ROCKS THE TWIN TRAGEDIES OF ARROGANCE & THE CONSCIOUNSESS OF COMPLACENCY. YEARS APART DOOMED FROM THE START. THEY OFFER A % BUT WHAT PRICE COULD ONE PUT ON A PERSON/S LIFE? HOW DO YOU REPAY FAMILY & FREINDS OF THE DECEASED FOR THEIR LIVES TAKEN BY ARROGANCE? THEIR DEATHS ARE A GRAND REMINDER THAT WE COULD BE NEXT. THE PAIN THE FAMILY & FRIENDS OF THE DECEASED GO THROUGH IS HORRIFIC. THEY MUST BE TREATED LIKE GOLD TO EASE THEIR PAIN.

ErikettaxDxD Says:
