Title: Diamonds and Dames~Episode 1~Mary Haines (Norma Shearer)~ 'The Women'~ 1939 Fluff Curls
Added: Nov 3, 2009
Author: LisaFreemontStreet
Duration: 6:18
Description:
The first of the all-requests series, Diamonds and Dames. Interestingly, the title of this series is unintentionally similar to a blog I visit often...Diamond Dame:http://www.diamonddame.com/Anyway, visit her cool blog for lots of great retro news and reviews.About Mary Haines: Norma Shearer played her in the movie and I'll provide a movie synopsis on my blog. The hairstyle is short but we 'faked it' here. This style is actually achieved with the 1930's/40's 'shingle' haircut as described in Creative Hairshaping by Ivan Anderson. It was very popular among the mature ladies of the time. I used an overpinning technique to mimic the fluff curls, as opposed to an underpinning technique that would give the hair a bobbed appearance. It's not perfect...but definitely workable. For that gorgeous "Norma" orchid, visit 'Belle Blossoms', as seen in my last product review:http://www.littlebellesboutique.com/item_120/Norma-Orchid.htmBy the way, I forgot to include the name of the persons who requested this look. So if you requested Mary Haines...say 'here here!' in the comments. :DEnjoy!

Dec 9, 2009 - they were still doing the shingle cut in the early 50's. I know because my mom took me to the hairdressers and asked for a shingle cut, and they knew how to do it. Love this and all your videos.

Sep 21, 2011 - Hello I am trying to recreate this look for a photo shoot. I do not have sponge curlers so I am tightly pin curling my hair. I also have hair that comes to my waist. Its heavy and doesn't look the same when I pin it up. If you have and suggestions for me please help! Thank you for your time and keep up the great work!
LisaFreemontStreet Says:
Sep 21, 2011 - @ashluemarie You probably have too much hair to accurately recreate this look. I wish I knew what else to say that would help...:(
