Kit Bowls Says:
May 10, 2012 - No, you're thinking of bocce ball (plastic balls) and petanque (metal balls). In those games, the ball is perfectly round and is delivered by throwing it. In bocce, the surface can be hard-packed dirt, sand, or grass while in petanque it is typically hard-packed dirt or asphalt. In bowls (called lawn bowling in North America), the bowls were made up of wood (lignum vitae was the popular type) up to the 20th century, phenolformaldehyde (a resin compound) in the 20th century, and now melamine.
Kit Bowls Says:
May 10, 2012 - They are called bowls in lawn bowling because they aren't perfectly round and thus, curve when rolled. The main point that is different in lawn bowling compared to its cousins bocce and petanque is that the "ball" is rolled NOT thrown. The playing surface also differs, being exclusively played on flat, finely-manicured grass courts called greens or artificial turfs with similar specifications. If you are still curious about the sport keep an eye on our channel. Vids coming soon!!!

May 21, 2012 - Well, if you're gonna go like that, then Brits are wrong too. Technically, you Brits made English, yes, but with your logic, Archaic English is the only "correct" English. Assuming you don't speak Archaic English (you say "you"), you can't really say that only British English is correct just because the Brits invented it.
