May 17, 2011 - I know, to each is own, but on this clip, to me it's like: "how to play double bass" then "how NOT to play double bass" haha. Gotta listen back to that Night Train cd... it's incredible how when NHOP plays, it just ain't COOKIN. Dude is all about tryna outplay Ray Brown, and lookin at his face you know he ain't confortable AT ALL at the end of his solo. My .02...

May 21, 2011 - NHOP sure know how to play fast, but i prefer listening to ray anyday than NHOP, both are incredible but ray REALLY know how to swing :D

Jun 7, 2011 - I was at this concert and remember drinking a beer and chatting with NHOP just after the concert at the Festival's musicians' bar... Great moment ! The giants were on the earth in those days... ;-)

Nov 21, 2011 - I fully agree with you that ray swings much harder than NHOP, however, i don't think it's at all accurate to describe any video of NHOP playing as "how not to play double bass". as everyone knows, NHOP was a true virtuoso on his instrument, and fantastic musician, as is evidenced by all the recordings and gigs he did with many of the worlds greatest jazz musicians. Also, let's be honest, there are very few bass players ever who would be able to stand next to ray's beat!

Nov 22, 2011 - You're defo right, but I always like to go a lil overboard with my points ahah
krisp75 Says:
Nov 26, 2011 - Is it so hard to fathom that you can play jazz if you aren't black? I think that If NHOP were black there wouldn't be any arguing. It's called racism. NHOP makes Ray sound like a sloppy old man.
krisp75 Says:
Nov 26, 2011 - And another thing: to say that NHOP couldn't swing is SO wrong - he practically grew up in a jazz club. Check out the video here on YT where he's playing with the great Bud Powell - at the age of 16! (Anthropology - v=TaSDinL6pC8)

Mar 14, 2012 - Wow...this whole performance is fantastic and that ending melody is absolutely just the perfect cherry on top...incredible. I could listen to this all day - as I have been, much over the past few days!

Mar 22, 2012 - WOW! I usually can't listen to upright bass solos, even from great bassists. But NHOP is maybe the only exception! DAYUM!

Mar 27, 2012 - I had the GREAT PRIVILAGE of seeing Nils, Martin and Oscar at the Crucible theatre in Sheffield a gig I spent my last £15 on and one that will stay with me for the rest of my life...RIP... we miss you all :0)

Apr 7, 2012 - Since the beginning of his history, comparison is in the spirit of jazz, in the playing of musicians, in the public reactions. Ray Brown has a "walking style" giving a strong swing mood, in line of Jimmy Blanton. NHOP is a member of bassists new generation who offer in extra of rythmic a melodic line (Eddie Gomez, Miroslav Vitous?...)

May 13, 2012 - Yea this page is bookmarked: Some good lessons here. With Niels sound, tho I've read nothing about this..it seems at least around this time (late 70's) his upright was miked differently. Very active (to use an elect. bass expression). With YouTube here I came looking for Samba de Orfeo w/Oscar, Joe & Niels (78). I first heard this in 1981 when I was 15. And it can't be denied from a recording perspective its just more accessible (audio sense). To compare Ray to Niels: Ray is a legend. Was then
