Title: Machete Heaven Intro (1 of 13)

Added: Jan 9, 2010

Author: Colhane

Duration: 4:32

Description:
This is the first of 13 videos covering a six day trip I took in the Mata Atlantica with Giuliano Toniolo. This area was very dense bush covered with Taquara, a bamboo like plant that makes travel very difficult. We spent six days with our machetes in our hands the entire time.

Jan 10, 2010 - I bet you'll be really glad to get home and just have a cool place to relax. Looks like a lot of work. Look forward to more videos of your trip.

Jan 10, 2010 - Colhane, have you ever thought about or considered getting a machete made from 3V or some other high abrasion steel. Do you think the cost would be worth it long term for longer edge holding and a blade that may last a lot longer? Being someone out there doing the hard yards your opinion is quite important.

Jan 10, 2010 - Hello there everyone! For me that was a unique experience, since the amount of knowledge I was exposed to was amazing! I can truely say that I learned more about dealing with machetes in 6 days than I ever did in my whole life and I am NOT exagerating!! I´m glad I can go out there with someone whose experience was gained from several wild locations of the world and not only in Brazil! Mac you being in Brazil sure adds a lot to bushcraft here! I´m sure they´ll love whats comin next!

Jan 10, 2010 - Machetes are like tires, they are going to wear out eventually. You can buy expensive tires, true, but not on my pay. Long term machete use is all about field sharpening. You sharpen every morning or evening and the edge will last the day. It would be nice to keep that beautiful, perfect edge I can put on them in the shop but at what cost and for how long, an extra day or two? Send me a 3V machete and i'll beat it up and do a review.

Colhane Says:

Jan 10, 2010 - This was the first of many I'm sure. Guys, Giuliano rides for the brand, that's a fact. It was great to get out to such a location with someone who knew what he was about in the bush. We both learned alot on this trip, from each other as well as from the bush. I didn't go to Catholic school but the Mata Atlantica teaches like a Nun with a ruler.

Jan 11, 2010 - Well.. Dont know if there are and 3V machetes to send you :) But thanks for the opinion. So.. how long a life do you get of the machete you are using? It seems to do a good job.

Colhane Says:

Jan 11, 2010 - The edge on a Tramontina will hold up to a full day's cutting of brush, less if you're doing bamboo. The thing that kills a machete is edge damage cause by hitting rocks and it is inevitable. That's one of the reasons I don't go in for high end machetes. You WILL bung it off a rock. It's not hard to take a file to a $6 machete.

giutoniolo Says:

Jan 11, 2010 - "...Step off that trail, go ahead, try it. You'll have biodiversity crawling up your legs..." hahahahahaha!!! That was great Mac!! I got it in my food bag too!! HAHAHAHAHA!!

knivesandstuff Says:

Jan 11, 2010 - Good point.. you do tend to hit rocks a lot when you cant see what your aiming clearly.. Thanks for the time you take doing these videos

Jan 12, 2010 - you mentioned your friend was carring a cyclone machette , where can you buy those? thanks for the mod video btw and the neck knife too.!

Colhane Says:

Jan 18, 2010 - The brand is SAICO and they are sold here in Brazil. A comparable machete would be the 12 inch Ontario.

Jan 24, 2011 - @colhane if you are just trying to cross terrain not trying to beat a path that can be seen from outer-space, the best, by far, is a Christmas tree knife. They are very light compared to a machete and you can get the full effect by just twitching your wrist. You will find that you can cover much more ground a lot faster for days on end with out even one sore muscle in you arms/hands. Not to mention the cutting noise is not even 1/3 of that of a machete. (for balance go with the 16" handle)

bowhunterpetemac Says:

Mar 17, 2011 - I have a 20" panga that my sister brought back from paraguay. It even works for chopping ash tree's.

NocturnalBreather Says:

Mar 19, 2011 - how thick is the spine?

bowhunterpetemac Says:

Mar 21, 2011 - NocturnalBreather it is 1/8" thick. Do you know where I can find a sheath long enough?

lustercowx Says:

Jun 9, 2011 - when i spent time in ecuador there was a plant like that, i think they called it Chusquea that really resembles that stuff. It was fun to cut down and made great walking sticks if cut at the thickest point.

Colhane Says:

Jun 11, 2011 - Taquara is still fragile even when mature. It is fun to cut for about two days...

mrouterrim Says:

Sep 27, 2011 - You said not to leave sharp points for the guy behind u. I know u are not making square cuts so what is it u are doing?
