Title: Connie Haines - Beryl Davis - Rhonda Fleming - Jane Russell
Added: Oct 5, 2008
Author: kester1940
Duration: 5:25
Description:
These 4 legendary ladies of movies and recording joined forces during the mid-1950s to form the Hollywood Christian Group to sing gospel songs. Albums, singles and TV appearances followed including this one - in which they perform a medley of spirituals. Connie, who sang with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey Bands during the 1940s, sadly died on 22 September 2008 at age 87. May this TV clip from 1954 serve as a tribute to the petite singer with the big voice. Rest in Peace Connie.

Feb 11, 2009 - I was about 10 and we went to the Los Angeles Airport to greet the Champion LA Rams. Jane Russell was married to our quarterback Bob Waterfield. I remember standing next to her and how wonderful she smelled. I was in love! Also remember "Do Lord" as a popular song in our house.

Nov 24, 2009 - Thanks for posting this because it gives me some sense of where some of the C&W came from in the 50's. The sad part of this is that it is hard to recognize that these ladies were going about this with probably pure motive and from real Christian hearts, but coming from today where we are so jaded by Christianity being so polical we probably can't see the motive.

Nov 25, 2009 - Beryl Davis was in private life Mrs. Peter Potter (Is It A Hit Or Is it A Miss). Both wonderful Christian human beings. Same can be said of Fleming, Haines, and Russell. I wonder whether Russell and Fleming keep in touch? Anyone?

Jul 10, 2010 - Wow! That is terrific. I was watching an old movie with Rhonda Fleming and had read that she could sing, so I was looking for something by her. This group surprised me so much. Don't know why exactly, but seeing Jane Russell sing about Jesus seemed odd to me. Maybe her faith was deeper than I imagined. I remember all these songs from my own religious childhood! Thanks!

Oct 28, 2010 - Both Rhonda and Jane have been Sunday School teachers for 30+ years and worked together. I did autograph shows with both. I am a lucky guy. They were class acts.

Nov 17, 2010 - Obviously you are not a Christian and don't understand what a lovely clip this is. I pray that you will come to know The Lord Jesus, you can ask Him into your life like the lovely ladies in the clip did. He turned their lives around and blessed them. You can be blessed too.

Jan 24, 2011 - Obviously you don't have a clue who these lovely ladies are honoring. This is super.

Jan 24, 2011 - @LovelyJanie21 The names of the songs are in the choruses; e.g. 'Do Lord.'

Mar 2, 2011 - This is from the Colgate Comedy Hour, Easter 1954 starring Abbott and Costello. You can buy the show on a ''3 movies on 1 dvd' disc - I got mine in the £1 shop. It contains Laurel and Hardy 'Flying Deuces', Abbott and Costello 'Africa Screams' and the Abbott and Costello 'TV Show'. This is a terrific little clip. These four stars do not appear anywhere else on the disc though.

Mar 13, 2011 - I was surprised to find out she was a Christian, but it's good that she had a strong faith.
