Mar 21, 2012 - They make different sounds. A d20 rolls more smoothly and for a longer time since its faces are smaller and the surface of impact is minimized. It's very easy even to untrained ear to recognize the difference between a d4 roll and a d20 roll, for example. For a d20 and d12, it simply takes more familiarity.
