May 8, 2012 - English emigrants took the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting. (... Apparently, this is cited from Wikipedia)

May 20, 2012 - Original? which original? This is an american folk song. The first known record of this song is from 1934. The members of "The Animals" weren't even born back then :D. There is no original, but it's well known that the lyrics where sung originally from a female persons view. The Animals changed the lyrics when they recorded the song 1964. There are hundreds of versions out there.

May 21, 2012 - Are you sure it's a whorehouse... I think the house of the rising sun is a metaphor for an opium house. I might be wrong though..

May 23, 2012 - Haha. That is too funny. I love when people post things like this and show they know just enough to get themselves in trouble. But I see that someone has already pointed out why I find your comment so amusing.

May 27, 2012 - Nobody knows if it was originally by a man or a woman, or if it's about a brothel. There was a womens prison in New Orleans with a rising sun image above the main entrance, so that is a popular interpretation also. Which goes along with the "ball & chain". People will keep arguing about these lyrics forever, but the fact is....nobody knows.

May 1, 2012 - I don't know who originally sung this song but it wasn't Leadbelly because it dates back to the 16th century lol. The original version was definitely sung by a woman though because the Rising Sun is a whorehouse & the original lyrics are the ones you hear in Nina Simone's or Marianne Faithfull's versions where they're clearly talking about going into prostitution. The men who sung it like The Animals changed the lyrics to suit it to their gender.
