Jan 27, 2012 - Can someone help me out? I don't understand why the whole Herman Wouk bit is funny. I don't want to pull the I'm too young card, but I think I might be too young.

Jan 27, 2012 - I found the Wouk item amusing 1) for Fred Allen's comment that a professional man is a "man who is employed" (host John Daly was notorious for giving the panel unhelpful info about mystery guests and this was exactly the kind of answer Daly might have given); 2) for the way Bennett Cerf was led to ask if Wouk was a Random House writer (continued ....)

Jan 27, 2012 - (msg concluded...) (Cerf was the head of RH and was always suspecting that the WML staff was trying bring on writers he should have known who would disguise themselves so well that he wouldn't recognize them, to the amusement of all); 3) for Daly's hilarity at Cerf's mistake (Cerf had long been pretending to insult Daly in little barbed exchanges during the show and Daly was always looking to get back at him). It is, in fact, more of an "insider" segment than the others are.

nocalsteve Says:
Feb 2, 2012 - He asked, "Do you write books?" Yes! Then he asked, "Are you an author?" Well, duh...if he writes books then he's an author!
windstorm1000 Says:
Feb 2, 2012 - Bennett frothes at the bit when the guest is a writer.
RayNDeere Says:
Feb 4, 2012 - The funny thing about Bob Hope is that he signed in as "Bing Crosby"
tamarexxe Says:
Feb 7, 2012 - apart from the amazing stars then, just the overall atmosphere of sophisticated, civilized people having fun together in such a charming manner.. that loss is heartbreaking. There actually was such a thing as "society" and "socialites" then. It seems we have lost something in the intervening years. How sad.

Mar 31, 2012 - The Herman Wouk bit was funny because Bennett Cerf worked for Randon House Publishing Company.

Apr 15, 2012 - A fantastic compilation! This is one of the reasons I really like the show and I am sure it is/was for many others!
romeman01 Says:
Apr 17, 2012 - I was likewise displeased, though not to the point of using foul language. Fortunately it has been replaced at this time by Donald Duck and Francis the Talking Mule ...
romeman01 Says:
Apr 21, 2012 - I have wondered a lot about that comment too. I think these people came from an educational system closer to the old uses of words. I just looked up the words in old dictionaries. 1913 Webster's Unabridged defines writer as: "One who writes, or has written; a scribe; a clerk." 1828 Webster's Unabridged, describing the Latin origin of author, says: "The primary sense is one who brings or causes to come forth." So author would be "creator"; writer could be writing under someone else's direction.
