Billie didn't have the voice, but she had the interpretation, such that she changed forever the way that female vocalists would sing henceforth. Then there is Ella who just put it all together, without the vocal heft of Sarah, or the tortured emotion of Billy, but who, nonetheless, took jazz vocals to another place.

I have to say that altho I greatly appreciate Billie I don't search out her music. She doesn't have a tone that appeals to me for more than a few songs. One jazz lady I never took to is Carmen McRae. Unappealing to my ears.
