Jan 22, 2012 - Oh yeah this is just the greatest thing eve...I bet it will spontaneously solve world hunger and poverty when they find the Higgs Boson...and it will magical suck up all the atmospheric CO2 so that we don't boil our planet...oh oh...I bet it will give us unlimited energy so that we don't have to worry about peak oil...oh and it surely will solve the economic collapse that is underway. No I hear you say...Why not? Ohhh...that's right, because this is a pointless waste of time, energy and money.
ammachi3 Says:
Jan 22, 2012 - Come on people, get real. This is just a stupid science people's ego trip. It has nothing to offer us practically that can alleviate the ills of our world. Thus, it is an obviously morally repulsive waste of money, time & energy. Imagine what could have been achieved if those 10,000 scientists, set their collective minds to mitigating climate change, or creating new energy sources/infrastructure? In short, they should have done something that actually mattered.

Jan 23, 2012 - @ammachi3 they all study all those things with that, to know all those wether problems go first to the fundamentals,, what we are really made of,, all this these things around us.. 100 years ago germs is just a theory,, but now we all know thers just morte than just bacteria, we all know the atom.. hard to explain in text.. we need this project.. its vital for their study...
ammachi3 Says:
Jan 23, 2012 - @UrgentUrge I was not knocking all of science. I was saying that the LHC is a waste of time, energy & money. Which it is. We could have put the money into creating alternatives energy sources to fossil fuels or better health care.
ammachi3 Says:
Jan 23, 2012 - @UrgentUrge This smashing of particles business is just a big kid's fantasy that has no real significance. So what if they find the Higgs Boson. Wopty f**king doooo....what has that changed? Absolutely nothing...that's what. There will still be the same amount of pain and suffering in the world, probably more because we choose to spend money on this instead of other things. That is the truth, my friend.

Jan 24, 2012 - Considering the cost of the war in iraq is like a thousand times more expensive, you can go suck it. Knowledge is the tool we use to solve the worlds problems, no matter how obscure it might seem to you.

Jan 24, 2012 - pure genius, and to those who think this is a pointless science, get real! no science is pointless!! if you want to have a go at cost etc just look at the military spend of the world...what a waste that is

Jan 28, 2012 - gotta love all the folks who knock this stuff online... all while using a by-product of cern... the internet.

Jan 29, 2012 - @ammachi3, hmm, finding the last piece to a equation that with out fail can answer any question.... Thus allowing absolute foreknowledge of outcomes for every experiment, is totally useless. Being able to eliminate trials of dead end methods, pointless, along with how worthless it will to be able to save all our effort and resources for the stuff we know can work..... Totally agree. You should write a book. You seem to out smart thousands of particle physicists, and even kaku, cox, hawking to n
FromHundredAcreWood Says:
Feb 2, 2012 - @ammachi3 This is nothing compared to other experiments. In the news a few months ago they reported that students at Oxford worked out the formula for a perfect piece of toast. Jimmy Carr on 8 Out of 10 Cats said, quite rightly, 'These people realise we still haven't got a cure for cancer, right?'
ammachi3 Says:
Feb 3, 2012 - @JasonMunro13 Yes, that is the biggest waste of time, energy and money. But CERN is also. It does not improve the quality of our lives. Therefore it is pointless. Nearly half the world is starving and in very bad health. The money on military and pointless science experiments should be spent of getting people out of depravation and extreme living conditions. This world is a desperate place, and most people are living in great hardship. These experiment do nothing to help them.
JasonMunro13 Says:
Feb 3, 2012 - @ammachi3 Use some logic, military spending is by far and away the largest percentage of most governments spend, between 20-30% for most developed nations, science spending is between 1-3%, lets not forget this very same argument has been used down the centuries against astrology/electricity/biology experiments which now have become part of our everyday lives. Right now your staring at a screen made of billions of billions of billions of the same particles they have been researching at CERN

Feb 3, 2012 - @JasonMunro13 I've sent you a prvite message...not enough space to wtire good reply...
ammachi3 Says:
Feb 3, 2012 - @anidork You can believe the following or not, it is still truth. People write books because of ignorance. If you experience the Absolute truth of the universe then words/symbols and machines are not needed. We can only experience something Ultimate or Absolute in nature if we go beyond what is limited and finite. The inherent and great limitations of the mind should be transcended. That requires deep and profound mediation. Not some over sized toys and elaborate symbology.
ammachi3 Says:
Feb 3, 2012 - @anidork Look, whatever results they get from CERN will just be second hand. It will not give you a direct personal experience of Absolute questions to the universe. It will just be abstract equations and data. There will still be separation between the question, the questioner and the answer that are found. This is simply the truth. Because of this, even if they prove in existence of the Higs Field or God, they will not directly experience it.
ammachi3 Says:
Feb 3, 2012 - @anidork Direct experience is needed, and that happens only in the deepest and most profound stages of mediation and nowhere else. This is an irrevocable fact and does not need anyone's approval to be any more or less true. It is a truth beyond the power of beliefs and the human mind. Sadly, these people we think are really clever are ultimately wasting their time in such endeavours. This will be proved in time. Until then, people can get excited about it if they want.
ammachi3 Says:
Feb 3, 2012 - @JasonMunro13 You should understand that science/technology brings both an equal amount good and bad into our world. Look closely and you will see this.
branahawk Says:
Feb 7, 2012 - @ammachi3 here's another thought.many of the problems of the world (our planet, I mean) come from human overpopulation.but you can't really solve that sensitive issue so quickly, just like you can't suddenly pop nuclear fusion out of the air because modern technology is decades behind that.the large hadron collider however, is something we can do.there was also no point in going to the moon or sending telescopes in space.we have to keep our spirit of exploration.it makes us human.
branahawk Says:
Feb 7, 2012 - @ammachi3 no matter what issues we are facing, we must also adress the great, cosmic questions, which everyone has. we can't stop reaching for the stars. if we do, we give up on our aspirations as a race. on the other hand, we must preserve our planet. as carl sagan said: "the sky calls to us, if we do not destroy ourselves - we will, one day, venture to the stars". the key is in balance. I assure you, CERN is NOT tipping that balance.
OblivionContinueum Says:
Feb 8, 2012 - @ammachi3 Imagine if you were there to say this to every great experiment or scientific project in history. Nothing would get done and we would be in the dark ages. Who are you to say what is and isn't going to be useful to humankind in the future, you don't know. It's long term, not just "This machine better cure world hunger tomorrow!"
