May 16, 2010 - My grandmother (my mother's mother) had been severely affected by Alzheimers' within 5 years before she died in 1998 at age 83. The disease incapacitated her intellectually and physically. She couldn't speak, walk, understand what was going on, recognize familiar faces, dress herself, feed herself, nor take care of herself and function independently. She lived under intense care of my aunt and uncle until her death. Losing both her parents was very very hard for my mother to bear.
