Duration: 8:54

Description:
A Smart Grid for Intelligent Energy Use:The Smart Grid involves the use of communications and computing technology to transmit and distribute energy more efficiently. This video describes the smart grid and how it will reduce our carbon footprint through energy efficiency and the integration of renewable sources of energy.Featuring interviews recorded at the IEEE Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles: Accelerating Innovation Conference (2007) and the IEEE Energy 2030 Conference (2008).Produced by IEEE and ScienCentral, Inc., with funding from IEEE Power & Energy Society, IEEE-USA, and the IEEE New Technology Directions Committee (NTDC).8 minutes running time. Ben1238 Says:

May 21, 2011 - So the grid will determine my power and when to turn it off? Question, what if I don't want the power off at that time?

theCosmicQueen Says:

May 21, 2011 - wow, this makes everyone far more vulnerable to mass outages, hackers, sabotage, etc. so in essence it's really the STUPID GRID".

ThePowerExcess Says:

Jun 1, 2011 - I do not think so. I am not a security expert but I am studying for my masters degree in electrical power systems. This kind of grid is the only logical solution for our energy problems. It is nothing more than the evolution of the power grid. Security will be an issue but the benefits will be great. Plus I know people with several phd's who can't figure out whether this is secure or not, therefore you definately can't either.

doublej706 Says:

Jun 22, 2011 - It seems like a very great idea. Security is the main issue with this. We won't have a choice in this issue, I've heard of electric companies just coming to your home and replacing the old meter without much information about it. I am all for sustainable energies but the repercussions from this is awful. It will link all of our homes to a computer database at an electric company that is monitored of your home's energy output, not only your home but each appliance that runs on electricity.

doublej706 Says:

Jun 22, 2011 - Ideas like this make me want to get off the grid completely and run self-sufficiently.

ThePowerExcess Says:

Jun 22, 2011 - Well I partly agree with you.I am not sure about the way that this thing is going to work, but your consumption is saved on some database in a way that can be traced back to you, this is a small problem. Your consumption is allready being measured and saved somewhere. What they are suggesting is that this is going to be automated. You don't have to worry about each device being monitored seperatly. This is not the case.

ThePowerExcess Says:

Jun 22, 2011 - The power meters only count the energy that passes through them, they can't tell where the energy goes.I agree with you when you say that personal data will be probably easier accesible to hackers or anything. But what is your power consumption data worth? I can't think of a way to harm you by knowing that. One last point, your phone conversations are saved on a database. This is much more sensitive stuff. However I've never heard of a security problem about this.

ThePowerExcess Says:

Jun 22, 2011 - I don't think that cancer is the problem with this idea. It definately isn't the only one. The stray loses and the control of the power flow would be huge problems as well.

straats Says:

Jul 7, 2011 - I am curious about solar flares and EMP pulses along with those. How is the grid going to deal with 1 in 500 year events, like the one that happened in the 1800's? Are they ready for a HUGE EMP pulse that comes with 1 in 500 year solar flare aimed directly at Earth?

Sep 14, 2011 - This is a no brainer - we must do this. Not only will this save us trillions of dollars long term and allow for greater use of renewable energy, but a bold smart grid program will create hundreds of thousands of jobs right now.

Oct 13, 2011 - increasing distribution efficiency as opposed to number of power plants is absolutely essential for the 21st century. smarter digital meters, superconducting wires are technologies that must be invested in.

PR4ET0RI4N Says:

Dec 5, 2011 - Wait, people actually want to settle for the 100-year old solution rather than embracing the latest technology? Hahaha, ok. Oh and all of you trying to take this thing apart, of course it's not perfect yet! No new technology ever is. It's not like one moment the Wright brothers were in the air for half a second with their prototype and only two years later the first Boeing 747 took to the skies. It will take time and money to iron out the problems, but eventually we will get there.

maromo1 Says:

Jan 20, 2012 - Smart grid (usually) includes massive distributed generation and microgrids. What does it mean? It means that the number of blackouts will be down to almost zero, that energy losses will be extremely low and investements needed in the grid will decrease in the future. Summing up: It improves your country economy. Whether it may be used to make the average joe poorer or not has nothing to do with the technology itself, it has to do with politicians and regulators.
