Added: Jul 1, 2006
Author: fekbritton
Duration: 4:46
Description:
Contested Streets: Breaking NYC Gridlock is the result of a creative partnership initiated by the New York based activists Transportation Alternatives and the film-makers Cicala Filmworks, who have collaborated to produce a full length documentary film that explores the rich diversity of New York City street life before the introduction of automobiles -- and then goes on to show how New York can follow the example of other modern cities that have reclaimed their streets as vibrant public spaces.Contested Streets features new footage of reclaimed streets in London, Paris and Copenhagen and interviews with New York and New Mobility savvy notables such as Ken Jackson, Mike Wallace, Bob Kiley, Majora Carter, Kathryn Wylde, Enrique Peñalosa, Jan Gehl, James Howard Kunstler, Eric Britton, and many more -- who help us to make our way through the morass of problems, resistances and opportunities that all our cities face. For more information on the film and DVD go to http://www.transalt.org/campaigns/reclaiming/contestedstreets/order.html

May 2, 2007 - The problems started in the "20th century" with the automobile? Might they not be more related to the NYC street grid, laid out in the 1820's? And speaking of the 1820's, some historians say the city smelled distinctly less nice before carriages were horseless. And it wasn't fun to cross the street wearing clean shoes.

May 13, 2007 - No Enrique Penalosa and poor use of Majora Carter. He has put these ideas into practice in Bogota (not these little boutique euro cities) to great effect, and she can say so much more than was shown here. check out her other clips.

May 11, 2009 - I'm looking forward to this documentary! Everyone should keep in mind that this is a trailer, not the film itself. Anyway, whether the grid was first planned and designed in the 1800's isn't the issue. The issue is that the grid has since been tailored for auto use only, excluding bicycles, relegating them to sharing space with significantly larger, faster vehicles. A grid would suit bicyclists perfectly fine if it were planned out more suitably.
