Description:
Parts used: http://jasonrj.net/blog/how-connect-hdtv-computerI explain the best way to connect your desktop or laptop computer to your HDTV. This will not work with a standard definition TV. I choose the HDMI cable method because it is the absolute best way to do this when concerned with picture quality. I use a DVI to HDMI converter but a video card with a built in HDMI port is even better. Please note that just about any computer is capable of doing this but if the video card is not powerful enough you may see choppy video on the TV as a result.DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON EXPENSIVE HDMI CABLES!!!!The cheap cables are EXACTLY as good as the ridiculously expensive ones. This is a proven fact that I find hilarious people try to argue:http://www.mint.com/blog/trends/the-rip1/http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/03/audiophiles-cant-tell-the-difference-between-monster-cable-and/http://gizmodo.com/268788/the-truth-about-monster-cable-part-2-verdict-cheap-cables-keep-upusually

May 17, 2012 - Usually the video card. It's probably a lot better performance than the "on board" video that is built into the motherboard.

May 18, 2012 - Will i be able to see my pc 'post' if i do it straight to my pc with no monitor and go in the BIOS?

May 18, 2012 - Wow, nice catch. I'm a pretty good grammar Nazi usually, clearly I failed here.Good work sensei :D
MrBrotato Says:
May 18, 2012 - If you have it connected to a TV? Yes. A TV is just a monitor marketed to people with cable and DVD players.

May 21, 2012 - i'm new to desktop pc,i only use laptops.yesterday i bought first gaming computer and i have a very stupid uestion.i dont know where to connect the dvi cable....do i connect it to the motherboard or graphics card place؟؟
MrBrotato Says:
May 22, 2012 - Usually the graphics card is the better option. Using the motherboard's built-in video port can hurt the performance of the computer because it's using resources (CPU + memory) whereas the graphics card has its own resources.

May 22, 2012 - Ahh, so no need to plug anything in the motherboard except keyboard and mouse right?and thanks :D

May 23, 2012 - I still currently have "No Signal" on my T.V if it's possible is there a way to detect your HDTV so it connects faster? or works quicker. I have tried most online forums and nothing is working for me.
MrBrotato Says:
May 23, 2012 - You probably just need to make sure you have your TV set to the right input channel and your computer is recognizing the TV.
RSSuBGuides Says:
May 24, 2012 - Thanks for the help man, I figured it out and it seems that I have two HDMI cables that I can plug into my tv and I was using the wrong one.

May 26, 2012 - Hi MrBrotato!! I have a HDTV with DVI port and doesn't have any HDMI or VGA port. My laptop has only VGA port Will it work if I'll connect VGA from laptop to TV's DVI port??? Thanks!!!
llx2o1 Says:
May 26, 2012 - my Samsung setup didn't allow me to choose the PC input...there is a solution to this but the cable im using is the same as yours so im stuck...
MrBrotato Says:
May 26, 2012 - Unfortunately this will not work as easily as you would think. VGA is an analog signal and DVI or HDMI are digital signals. In order to convert from analog to digital you need some kind of converter box. There are links to these on my blog post, but they are a bit more expensive. The easiest thing to do might be investing in a slightly newer video card that has DVI or HDMI ports and use those.
MrBrotato Says:
May 26, 2012 - Your TV should have multiple input channels that you can switch between. Most TV's have an "input" button that just rotates between them.
llx2o1 Says:
May 27, 2012 - Yes, but it only switch back between TV and AV, thats why i need to go into setting and turn on the PC input first =(

May 27, 2012 - im having problems i hav an hp desktop and a sony tv i hav them connected with a dvi to hdmi cable but my tv says no signal please help all hdmi input are working al ready checked dont know if this matters but my hp slimline tower doesnt have but one vga input which is connected to my hp w1858 monitor so that leaves me no choice but to connect my hdmi cable to the dvi input on the monitor is that ok or m i wrong? please help
MrBrotato Says:
May 27, 2012 - Sounds like what you're doing is right. DVI to HDMI is what you want, along with changing the TV to the right input channel. I'm not sure why that wouldn't work. Can you see if the TV is detected by looking at your display settings? Right-click your desktop to see the display settings.
Decktrio Says:
May 27, 2012 - I agree with everything you said... except for the part in the beginning about cable quality. Any kind of signal is susceptible to noise, and extra shielding in the cable (if it fits within your budget) is always a good thing. Otherwise, great job explaining everything!
moshdumitru Says:
May 28, 2012 - VGA to Component video port (red, blue and green) will it work or they are not same..
WS6Outlaw Says:
May 28, 2012 - thanks for the reply yea i went to display settings and its not coming up only my hp monitor. i think this piece of crap isnt meant to be connectd to a tv i read some reviews on it like i said my computer only has 1 vga output and thats connected to the monitor the monitor however does hav a vga and dvi input so thats where i connected the dvi to hdmi but i think since its an input not an output it only recieves signal not send it to the tv
WS6Outlaw Says:
May 28, 2012 - im saying that cause when the dvi end is connected to the monitor and hdmi end connected to the tv i get a no signal but when i connect the hdmi end to my ps3 i get signal on my monitor so thats y i think its only meant as in input to recieve signal not output to send signal... im not to smart with this stuff but since i had my monitor and tv connected togetther i thought i could just send the signal from my monitor to my tv but i think thats not goin to happen
MrBrotato Says:
May 28, 2012 - Another possibility is that maybe it's just a really low-end graphic card and not capable of outputting to both ports at the same time, I've seen some where it can either be VGA or DVI, but not both at the same time.
WS6Outlaw Says:
May 28, 2012 - oh ok well thank you for your time i apreciate it
