Jan 25, 2012 - Ok I've been playing guitar for 3 years ever since I was 12 I'm now 15. And I want to become a Virtuoso at guitar one day. But I've got this thing that bugs me a lot I feel that I need to master the guitar by a certain amount of time or I won't be a Virtuoso. I've literally destroyed my social life for this I've sold a ton of shit so I can stay devoted but that one thing keeps bugging me. I need advice really bad! Can some one help me out?

Jan 29, 2012 - I wish that I had You tube videos like this one when I was just a beginner. You young guys are so fortunate. This is why there are so many very young "good" players today.

Feb 5, 2012 - I dont understand how that 12 bar blues is in E. If you look at an Blues pentatonic scale in E, there is no C#. Shouldn't that be a blues in F#/Gb ? And how is he doing a chord progression in A7, but combining it with an E pentatonic scale ><. Music makes no sense

Feb 7, 2012 - @FTR01 It makes no sense if you learn titbits from YT! In short, the key of E is E F# G# A B C# D# E. The Blues obtains is distinct tonality by flattening the 3rd and 7th notes & limiting (but not restricting) the core melodic notes to 5 (pentatonic) hence we get E G A B D to fiddle with. The 3 underlying chords are E(7) [EG#B (+ D)], A(7) [AC#E (+G)] & B(7) [BD#F# (+A)], often played as dominant 7ths to add more spice. The chord/scale contrast makes it work - listen to the masters!
FTR01 Says:
Feb 7, 2012 - @DannyDesperate So when I am playing blues, I can sometimes borrow notes from the major scale? Or are you saying that when you are playing a chord you can borrow those notes and incorporate them into the scale you are playing?
DannyDesperate Says:
Feb 7, 2012 - @FTR01 You can do both, either, or neither. Every player is different, listen to Charlie Parker playing a Blues and listen to Roy Buchanan. Better still listen to a piano player (say JP Johnson) where the underlying chords are an integral part of the melodic invention. It's not a matter of rules, but creativity. Likewise the phrasing is crucial, with the primary strong / resolving notes working together with the secondary passing / approach notes. As I said, listen to the masters!
